CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee women's cross country team took part in the Royal Cross Country Classic hosted by Queens University of Charlotte on Friday afternoon. Competing against teams from across all NCAA Divisions, the Generals came away with a ninth-place finish out of 21 teams.
W&L was paced by junior Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton), who came away with an 18th-place finish out of 201 runners with a personal-best time of 18:19.
She was followed by sophomore Brandie Huffman (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier), who finished in 19:01 to place 44th overall. Sophomore Annelise Madison (Roca, Neb./Norris) placed 60th with a time of 19:33, junior Molly Ortiz (Ketchikan, Alaska/Ketchikan) finished in 74th overall with a mark of 19:54 and sophomore Katie Driest (Davidson, N.C./North Mecklenburg) rounded out the Generals' top five runners with a time of 20:56 for a 114th-place finish.
The final two runners for W&L were senior Kathryn Iwata (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Prep) and junior Teresa Soley (Lebanon, N.J./Mother of Divine Grace), who finished in 126th and 127th with times of 21:19 and 21:24, respectively.
The Generals return to action on October 29, when they take part in the ODAC Championships hosted by Lynchburg College. The women's race is slated to begin at 11:00 am.
