FOREST, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's cross country team was a runaway favorite in the 2011 ODAC Women's Cross Country Preseason Poll. The Generals received 7-of-9 first-place votes and totaled 63 points.
The Generals, who defeated Lynchburg College by a single point at last year's championship meet, were followed by the Hornets, who received one first-place vote among 54 points and Bridgewater, which garnered the final first-place vote and 52 points. Roanoke (43), Virginia Wesleyan (38), Guilford (27), Randolph (21), Eastern Mennonite (13) and Emory & Henry (13) rounded out he poll.
W&L welcomes back several all-conference runners from last season's squad, including junior Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and sophomore Annelise Madison (Roca, Neb./Norris).
Schultz, the 2009 ODAC Rookie of the Year in cross country and indoor track & field, repeated her strong rookie season with a fifth-place finish at last season's championship meet.
Last season, Madison garnered second team all-conference laurels by virtue of her 11th-place finish.
Also returning for the Generals is junior Molly Ortiz (Ketchikan, Alaska/Ketchikan), who narrowly missed All-ODAC honors with a 15th-place finish at last year's championships, and sophomore Brandie Huffman (Warrenton,Va./Fauquier), who is coming off a second-place finish in the 5000m at the ODAC Outdoor Championships.
W&L begins its quest for a repeat title when it takes part in the ODAC Preview meet on Thursday in Bedford, Va. The race is slated to begin at 6:00 pm.
