Volleyball vs. Mt. St. Joseph

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team fell to Mt. St. Joseph, 25-22, 25-18, 25-23, in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional on Thursday afternoon at Wittenberg College.

The Generals were paced by junior setter Megan Steinhardt’s (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) 28 assists and a game-high 18 digs, while junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) amassed 11 kills and nine digs. Senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) posted eight digs, seven kills and two service aces, while senior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) registered 10 kills and nine digs.

Washington and Lee wraps up the 2008 season with a 31-7 overall mark, while Mt. Volleyball vs. Bridgewater

ROANOKE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated Lynchburg, 3-0, in the championship match of the ODAC Tournament to capture its eighth-straight conference title.

With the 25-19, 25-18, 25-23, victory, the Generals now stand at 31-6 on the season while Lynchburg wraps ups the 2008 campaign with an overall record of 16-16. W&L advanced to the finals on the strength of a 25-15, 26-24, 15-15 sweep of Bridgewater.

For W&L head coach Bryan Snyder, this is the fourth time that he has led the Generals to at least 30 wins in a season, and the first time since they won 32 matches in 2005.

The Generals, winners of seven-straight ODAC Tournament titles, were paced by junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep), who notched 14 kills and 14 digs. Senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) registered nine kills and senior middle blocker Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) posted eight kills, while junior right side Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) added 22 digs. Junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) amassed 34 assists and 11 digs.

With win, the Generals improved to 29-6 overall, while Guilford fell to 6-23 overall.

W&L will face the winner of the match between fourth-seeded Roanoke and fifth-seeded Bridgewater in Saturday’s semifinal match at 11:00 am. In the sweep of Asbury, the Generals once again received a strong showing from Phillips as she notched 11 kills and 11 digs. Harrison topped the Blue and White with 26 digs and added three service aces, while Steinhardt logged 28 assists. LEXINGTON, Va. – In a battle of teams with identical 9-0 records in ODAC play, it was the W&L volleyball team that prevailed over Randolph-Macon, sweeping the Yellow Jackets, 3-0, to assure itself the No. 1 seed in the ODAC Tournament.

The Generals (25-6, 10-0 ODAC) defeated R-MC (23-8, 9-1), winners of 17 of its last 19 matches, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19.

W&L was led by senior Laura Maurer’s (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) 13 kills and 20 digs, while junior Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) added 10 kills and 16 digs. Junior Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) chipped in 11 digs.

Junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) amassed 18 assists and eight digs, with classmate Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) logging 19 assists.

Maurer, and fellow seniors Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg), Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) and Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) all played their final match at the Warner Center and were honored at the beginning of the evening. The foursome recorded a 39-1 (.975) record in ODAC regular season play over four seasons and an overall record of 115-25 (.821).

The Generals have one final tune-up before participating in the ODAC Tournament, set to be played next weekend, when they travel to Centre to take part in the Halloween Bash. HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Following Friday evening’s tough 3-2 loss to No. 1 Juniata, the W&L volleyball team splits its matches on the final day of the Wid Guisler Invitational. The Generals fell to Carnegie Mellon, 3-0, to open the day and then defeated New York University (NYU), 3-2.

 W&L now stands at 24-6 overall and 9-0 in the ODAC heading into a matchup with Randolph-Macon, who is also a perfect 9-0 in league play, on Wednesday in Lexington.

In the Generals 25-22, 25-10, 25-22 loss to the Tartans, junior Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) and senior Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) had six kills apiece. Junior Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) led W&L with 14 digs, while Phillips added 11.

In beating the Violets 25-15, 15-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-11, W&L received 17 kills from Phillips, 12 from Ulrich and 10 from sophomore Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney). Sophomore Summer Goldberg (Marietta, Ga./Woodward Academy) led the way with 27 digs, while Schmitz and Phillips chipped in 21 and 13, respectively. Junior Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) notched 40 assists in the win.

Volleyball at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The W&L volleyball team pushed Juniata, ranked No. 1 in Division III, to five games before falling, 3-2, on Friday night as it took part in the Wid Guisler Invitational hosted by Juniata.

The Generals drop to 23-5 on the season with the 11-25, 26-24, 25-27, 25-23, 7-15 loss, while Juniata improves to 24-3.

W&L was led by senior Laura Maurer’s (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) 14 kills, with classmate Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) adding 11 and junior Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) chipping in 10. Junior Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) totaled 22 digs to pace the Generals, while Phillips had 21 and Maurer 18. Junior Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) contributed 40 assists.

The Generals have  lost to several highly ranked opponents this season, as Juniata (No. 1), Emory (No. 2), Wittenberg (No. 7) and Christopher Newport (No. 21) have all been ranked at the time that they beat W&L.

Washington and Lee continues play on Saturday, with a 1:00 pm match against Carnegie Mellon, followed by a 3:00 pm match with New York University (NYU).
                                                                                                                                                                                              

Volleyball vs. Sweet Briar

LEXINGTON, Va. – The W&L volleyball team improved to 23-4 overall and 9-0 in the ODAC with a 3-0 win over Sweet Briar (6-19, 1-8) on Tuesday evening.

After winning the first set, 25-11, the Generals found themselves tied 11-11 in the second set. Following a side out that made it 12-11 in favor of W&L, junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) served out the match as the Generals reeled off 13-straight points, including fours service aces from Steinhardt, to win 25-11. W&L then won the third and final set, 25-16.

Sophomore Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) led the offense with seven kills, while senior Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg), sophomore Louise Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and first-year Megan Daily added five apiece. Steinhardt recorded 18 assists, and Ulrich and senior Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) chipped in four blocks each. Sophomores Jenna Finger (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) and Summer Goldberg (Marietta, Ga./Woodward Academy) led W&L with seven and eight digs, respectively.

With the win, the Generals have set up a first-place showdown with Randolph-Macon next Wednesday. Both teams will enter the match with perfect 9-0 records in the ODAC, and looking to secure the top-seed in the ODAC Tournament.

The Generals return to the court this weekend when they travel to Huntingdon, Pa., to take part in the Juniata Invitational. NORFOLK, Va. -- The W&L volleyball team stretched its winning streak to a season- high 12 matches with victories over Virginia Wesleyan (3-2) and Catholic (3-0) on Saturday afternoon.

Despite falling behind two sets to one, the W&L volleyball team (22-4, 8-0 ODAC) rallied to defeat the Marlins (16-9, 6-3) 25-18, 21-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-9. Junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) led the Generals with 16 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) added 14 and senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) 13. Phillips also led the way with 23 digs. Junior Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) recorded 21 digs and sophomore Summer Goldberg (Marietta, Ga./Woodward Academy) chipped in 17. Junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) had a season-high 54 assists.

Following the hard fought victory over VWC, W&L swept Catholic (7-22) 25-11, 25-16, 25-13. First-year outside hitter Megan Daily (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) paced the Generals with a career-high 11 kills, while Schmitz chipped in nine to go along with eight digs. Steinhardt once again topped W&L with 21 assists and sophomore setter Jenna Finger (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) added 18.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeat Guilford, 3-0, on Wednesday evening to reach the 20-win plateau and now stands at 20-4 overall and 7-0 in the ODAC. Guilford falls to 5-18, 2-5.

With the win, the Generals extend their winning streak to a season-best 10 matches, while also extending their current set winning streak to 29 sets.

Senior Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) paced W&L with 14 kills while classmate Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) and junior Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) added nine apiece. Junior Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) led the Generals with 14 digs with Phillips contributing 13. Junior Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) topped the Blue and White with 35 assists and chipped in seven digs.

W&L returns to the court when it travels to Virginia Beach to take part in a tri-vite with Virginia Wesleyan and Catholic on Saturday. Volleyball vs. LaGrange

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball wrapped up with Averett Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record following 3-0 victories over LaGrange and Ferrum on Saturday.

The Generals breezed by LaGrange 25-6, 25-12, 25-8 in the their first match of the day, then followed with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-15 triumph over Ferrum to push their consecutive sets won streak to 23.

The Generals breezed by LaGrange 25-6, 25-12, 25-8 in the their first match of the day, then followed with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-15 triumph over Ferrum to push their consecutive sets won streak to 23.

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The W&L volleyball team improved to 15-4 overall and 6-0 in the ODAC with a 3-0 victory over Lynchburg on Tuesday evening.

The Generals kept pace with Randolph-Macon, 3-0 winners over Sweet Briar, with the 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 sweep of the Hornets at Turner Gymnasium.

W&L was led by sophomore middle blocker Louise Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and sophomore outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) who tallied nine kills apiece, while junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) added seven. Junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) paced the Generals with 27 assists and 15 digs. LEXINGTON, Va. – Fueled by a 14-6 scoring run to close out the second set, the W&L volleyball team defeated Ferrum, 3-0, on Thursday evening.

After winning the first set 25-18, W&L was trailing, 17-11, in the second and in danger of dropping a set at home for the second consecutive match, when the Generals went on a 14-6 scoring run to close out the set 25-23. W&L then won the third set, 25-5 to improve to 12-4 on the season and 9-0 at the Warner Center.

Washington and Lee was led by junior Rachael Phillips’ (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) 15 kills, while senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) added nine. Junior libero Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) paced the Generals with 16 digs. Sophomore libero Summer Goldberg (Marietta, Ga./Woodward Academy) added 14 digs and Phillips chipped in 12. W&L received 30 assists from junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park).

LEXINGTON, Va. - - The W&L volleyball team defeated Emory & Henry, 3-1, on Wednesday evening to improve to 5-0 in the ODAC and 11-4 overall. Emory & Henry falls to 12-4, 3-3 with the loss.

Despite dropping its first set at home this season, W&L managed to rebound from the setback and defeat the Wasps 25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22 to remain atop the ODAC.

The Generals were led by sophomore outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) as she topped W&L with 15 kills and contributed 25 digs on the evening. Junior libero Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) paced the Generals with 34 digs and senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) added16 digs of her own as well as 15 kills. Junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) notched 10 kills and chipped in 18 digs. Junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) totaled 46 assists for Washington and Lee.

CROZET, Va. – In a match played at Western Albemarle High School, the Washington and Lee volleyball team fell, 3-0, to No. 21 Christopher Newport on Sunday. The Generals now stand at 10-4 on the season.

Playing an American Volleyball Coaches Association ranked team for the third time in its last four matches, W&L fell 25-17, 25-18, 25-17.

Sophomore setter Jenna Finger (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) paced W&L with 15 assists and 11 digs, while junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) added 14 assists. Junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) chipped in 11 kills and nine digs and senior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) totaled 12 digs.

Of Washington and Lee’s four losses this season, three of them have come to teams ranked in the Top 25 by the AVCA.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated ODAC-foe Bridgewater, 3-2, on Saturday to improve to 10-3 on the season and 4-0 in the ODAC. Bridgewater, the only ODAC team to defeat W&L since the start of the 2001 season, falls to 12-4, 3-2.

The Generals prevailed 21-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 15-9, in what was just their second five-set match of the season.

W&L was led offensively by sophomore middle blocker Louise Brooks’ (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) 11 kills, with senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) and senior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) adding 10 apiece. Sophomore outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and junior right side Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) each contributed nine kills, while Harrison led the Generals 21 digs. Maurer tallied 19 digs, Schmitz notched 18 and Ulrich 13. Junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) totaled 28 assists to go with 16 digs and sophomore setter Jenna Finger (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) added 17 assists and 13 digs.

SALEM, Va. -- In a battle of unbeaten teams the Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated Roanoke 3-0 on Tuesday evening to send the Maroons to their first loss of the season. With the win the Generals improve to 8-0, 3-0 on the season, while Roanoke falls to 10-1, 0-1.

 In sweeping the Maroons 25-21, 25-19, 26-24 the Generals extend their set winning-streak to 24. The 24 consecutive sets won is the longest such streak since 2005, when W&L won 27 consecutive sets between Oct. 15-29.

The Generals were paced by junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) who led the Generals with 14 kills and added nine digs. Sophomore middle blocker Louise Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) totaled eight kills and four blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) contributed six kills and nine digs. Junior right side Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) led W&L with 10 digs and junior setters Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission So.) and Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) chipped in 20 and 15 assists, respectively.

W&L returns to action as it travels to Atlanta to take part in the Emory National Invitational this weekend. Phillips notched 10 kills and Ulrich nine, in the victory over Averett (1-9), while sophomore middle blocker Louise Brooks (Baltimore, MD./Bryn Mawr) added a career-high eight. Stevens amassed 27 assists. For Phillips, it marked the fifth time that she has recorded double-digits in kills this season, and the 32nd time of her career.

The 7-0 start to the season is the best such start since the Generals started 9-0 in 2003.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday as they head to Roanoke for an ODAC tilt. First-year outside hitter Megan Daily (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) added five kills and senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) chipped in four kills and five digs. Junior setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission, So.) contributed 16 assists.

Phillips notched 10 kills and Ulrich nine, in the victory over Averett (1-9), while sophomore middle blocker Louise Brooks (Baltimore, MD./Bryn Mawr) added a career-high eight. Stevens amassed 27 assists. For Phillips, it marked the fifth time that she has recorded double-digits in kills this season, and the 32nd time of her career.

The 7-0 start to the season is the best such start since the Generals started 9-0 in 2003.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday as it heads to Roanoke for an ODAC tilt. Volleyball vs. Eastern Mennonite

LEXINGTON, Va. – A balanced attack highlighted the W&L volleyball team’s 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-19) victory over visiting Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday evening. With the win the Generals run their record to 5-0, 1-0 ODAC, while EMU slips to 3-7, 0-1.

In winning their fifth-straight match, the Generals received balanced contributions from a variety of players as junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep), the reigning ODAC Volleyball Player of the Week, led W&L in both kills and digs with nine and 10, respectively. Sophomore outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) added eight kills, while senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) and junior right side Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) totaled five apiece. Ulrich also chipped in seven digs.

Junior setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission So.) contributed a team-high 16 assists, while junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park Texas, Cedar Park) added 10 of her own.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Randolph and Averett. Lexington, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team swept its matches for a second-straight day as it wrapped up the W&L Invitational, held in the Warner Center, with a perfect 4-0 record. The Generals opened play with a victory over Southern Virginia, 25-14, 26-24, 25-9, and followed that up by defeating Marietta 25-20, 25-21, 25-21.

In the victory over Southern Virginia (5-4) the Generals were paced by junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl/Tampa Prep) who totaled 10 kills, while senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, PA./Gettysburg) notched eight kills. Stevens once again paced the Generals with 25 assists, while  sophomore outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and Phillips added 13 and eight digs, respectively.

W&L returns to the court on Wednesday when it hosts Eastern Mennonite at 6:30 pm.
