Volleyball vs Southwestern

SHERMAN, Texas – The fifth-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team fell to fourth-seeded Southwestern, 30-24, 30-21, 30-27, in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships on Thursday afternoon at Austin College.

The Blue and White were paced by senior right side Jess Hudock’s (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) nine kills, 14 digs, and two service aces, while sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) racked up 14 kills and seven digs. Junior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) amassed seven kills and 11 digs and sophomore setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission So.) totaled 18 assists and 12 digs. Senior setter Lauren Rudolph (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) chipped in 14 assists.

With the loss, the Generals complete the 2007 season with a 29-6 overall mark, while Southwestern advances to the second round of the NCAA tournament and will compete against first-seeded Trinity (Texas) on Friday at 4:30 pm CST.

Volleyball vs Randolph-Macon

ROANOKE, Va.-- The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated first-seeded Bridgewater, 30-22, 30-19, 30-18, in the finals of the 2007 ODAC Championship to win its seventh-straight conference title on Saturday at Hollins University.

The Generals advanced to the finals after a 30-14, 30-17, 30-25 triumph over sixth-seeded Randolph-Macon in the morning semifinal match.

In the championship match, the Blue and White were led by sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips' (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) 16 kills and six digs, while junior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) amassed 11 kills and eight digs. Senior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) totaled nine kills and 11 digs, while junior Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) added six kills and nine digs. Sophomore setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) tallied 20 assists and 12 digs and senior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) notched 19 assists and seven digs.

In the semifinal contest, W&L was paced by Phillips, who amassed 18 kills and 13 digs, while Maurer registered 12 kills and 18 digs. Ulrich racked up seven kills and 11 digs and Hudock tallied seven kills and eight digs. Stevens chipped in 23 assists and 10 digs, while Rudolph added 13 assists.

Phillips was named ODAC MVP, while Hudock and Maurer were named to the ODAC All-Tournament Team.

The Generals (29-5) received the ODAC's automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Tournament and will find out on Sunday who they will face in the opening round.

Volleyball vs Bridgewater

The Blue and White were paced by junior outside hitter Laura Maurer’s (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) 10 kills, 11 digs and three service aces, while senior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla.Holy Names) amassed seven kills, 11 digs and eight service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) registered 10 kills, while senior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) added 17 assists and seven digs. Junior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) tallied seven kills and sophomore setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission So.) chipped in 20 assists and four digs.

With the loss, Emory and Henry wraps up its season with a 19-8 overall record.

The Generals (27-5) advance to the semifinals and will take on sixth-seeded Randolph-Macon on Saturday at 10:30 am at Hollins University.

Volleyball vs. University of Cumberlands

MARYVILLE, Tenn. –- The Washington and Lee volleyball team set a new program record for consecutive victories in a 30-16, 30-21, 30-14 win over University of Cumberlands on Saturday at the Maryville Tournament. The Generals have now extended their winning streak to 22-straight matches, besting the previous record of 21-straight wins set during the 2005 season.

In the win over Cumberlands (6-24), the Blue and White were paced by senior right side Jess Hudock’s (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) nine kills, six digs, and four service aces, while sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) tallied 16 kills. Junior right side Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) amassed eight kills and five digs, while freshman middle hitter Louise Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) chipped in five kills and three blocks. Sophomore setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission So.) added 22 assists and 12 digs.

The Generals regular season has now ended with a 26-5 overall record. The Blue and White will compete next weekend in the ODAC tournament at Hollins University.

Volleyball at Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. –The Washington and Lee volleyball team tied the program record for consecutive victories with a pair of wins at the Maryville Tournament on Friday evening. The Generals downed Rhodes, 30-21, 30-28, 30-20, before defeating Maryville, 30-21, 30-17, 30-24 in the nightcap to stretch their winning streak to 21-straight matches.

In the win over Maryville (18-11), W&L was paced by Phillips’ 12 kills and four digs, while Hudock added 10 kills and five digs. Maurer recorded nine kills and seven digs, while junior middle blocker Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) racked-up five kills and seven blocks. Stevens added 13 digs and 19 assists, while Rudolph registered 15 assists and four digs.

The Blue and White (25-5) return to action on Saturday as they take on University of Cumberlands at 12:30 pm.

Volleyball vs. Lynchburg

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team improved its record to 23-5 overall and 9-1 in the ODAC with a 30-21, 32-30, 30-27, 30-22 triumph over Lynchburg College on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Blue and White were paced by sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips' (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) season-high 25 kills, while senior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) registered 10 kills, eight digs, and five service aces.

Also making headway for the Generals was junior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area), who notched 16 kills and 11 digs, while freshman outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) tallied 19 digs. Sophomore setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) chipped in 37 assists.

With the loss, the Hornets are now 17-7 overall and 8-2 in the ODAC.

W&L returns to action this weekend at the Maryville Tournament. The Generals tip off the tournament against Rhodes on Friday at 4:00 pm.

Volleyball at Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated Randolph College, 30-6, 30-19, 30-21, on Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education and Recreation (PER).

The Generals (22-5, 8-1), who have won 18-consecutive matches, were paced by junior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who notched six kills and eight digs, while senior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) recorded six kills and six digs. Sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) registered 11 kills, while freshman setter Jenna Finger (Homer, Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) amassed 14 assists and eight digs. Junior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) totaled five kills and seven digs and freshman middle blocker Louise Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) chipped in three kills and three blocks.

With the loss, Randolph fell to 4-21 overall and 2-6 in the ODAC.

The Blue and White returns to ODAC action on Wednesday as it hosts Lynchburg at 6:30 p.m.

Volleyball at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – The Washington and Lee volleyball team cruised to a 30-26, 30-20, 30-22 victory over Randolph-Macon on Thursday evening at Crenshaw Gymnasium.

The Generals (21-5, 7-1) were led by junior outside hitter Laura Maurer’s (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) 12-kill, 19-dig effort.

Sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) contributed 11 kills and six digs, while junior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) posted eight kills and 16 digs. Senior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) notched six kills and 16 digs and freshman outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) added 13 digs and three service aces.

Sophomore setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) amassed 21 assists, four digs and three service aces, while senior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) logged 18 assists and seven digs.

The loss dropped Randolph-Macon to 10-11 overall and 5-2 in the ODAC.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Randolph College for a 12:00 pm contest.

Volleyball at Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee volleyball team clinched its 10th-straight 20-win season with a 30-21, 30-14, 30-23 victory over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday evening at the EMU University Commons.

The Generals (20-5, 6-1), who have won 16 consecutive matches, were led by sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep), who totaled a team-high 16 kills. Junior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) notched nine kills, 12 digs and three service aces, while senior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) registered seven kills and nine digs. Sophomore setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) amassed 20 assists and 10 digs and senior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) chipped in 16 assists and four digs.

With the loss, Eastern Mennonite fell to 7-19 overall and 1-6 in the ODAC.

With the loss, the Maroons are now 14-10 overall and 4-3 in the ODAC.

The Generals continue competition this weekend at the Christopher Newport Tournament. W&L will start the tournament Friday by taking on ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan at 1:00 pm.

DANVILLE, Va. – The Washington and Lee volleyball team notched two victories in the Averett Invitational on Saturday. The Generals downed Queens 30-14, 31-29, 30-17 in the opener, before defeating Greensboro 30-23, 30-19, 30-23, in their second contest.

The Generals were paced by sophomore right side Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School), who tallied seven kills, seven digs, four aces and three blocks, while senior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) notched 11 assists and three aces.

Also making headway for the Generals were sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep), who recorded eight kills and sophomore right side Jessica Bunnell (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy), who tallied seven digs.

Volleyball vs. Christopher Newport

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team opened its 2007 season by splitting a pair of matches in the first day of the W&L Invitational. The Generals defeated Southern Virginia in the first match of the day, 24-30, 30-28, 30-28, 31-33, 15-10, but fell to Christopher Newport in the nightcap, 30-26, 30-16, 30-14.

In the win over Southern Virginia (7-3), the Generals were paced by junior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who tallied 22 kills and 11 digs. Senior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) notched 17 kills, while junior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) posted 10 kills and 13 digs. Senior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) amassed 35 assists and 10 digs.

The loss to Christopher Newport (2-5) ended the Generals’ program-record home-court winning streak that had reached 26 matches dating back to the 2005 season. Maurer totaled six kills and eight digs, while Ulrich posted five kills and seven digs. Sophomore setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) added 14 assists.

The Generals continue action on Saturday as they host McDaniel at 10:30 am and Southwestern at 3:30 pm.
