W&L VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO STEVENS TECH IN SWEET 16 MATCHUP (11/11)

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The fifth-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team fell to second-seeded Stevens Tech in the Sweet 16 of the 2006 NCAA Division III Championships by a score of 26-30, 38-40, 30-22, 22-30 on Saturday evening in Hoboken, N.J.

The Generals, who were making their first-ever appearance in the Sweet 16, were led by junior right side Jess Hudock's 13 kills and three
service aces and sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer, who totaled 11 kills. Freshman setter Kristi Stevens notched 22 assists and senior libero Lauren Edmonson tallied 16 digs and three service aces. Sophomore middle blocker Kassie Bagley also contributed eight blocks.

With the loss, the Generals complete the 2006 season with a 29-8 overall mark. With the win, Stevens Tech improves to 34-5 and advances to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.

W&L VOLLEYBALL ADVANCES TO SWEET SIXTEEN WITH 3-2 WIN OVER TOP-SEEDED NYU

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The fifth-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship for the first time in program history with a 25-30, 30-28, 30-19, 29-31, 15-13 victory over top-seeded and 16th-ranked New York University on Friday evening at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) paced the Generals with a school-record 11 service aces and a team-high 25 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) registered 12 kills and eight blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) racked up 11 kills and 16 digs. Junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) added nine kills and 18 digs and junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) totaled 29 assists.

With the win, the Generals (29-7) advance to the finals of the New York Regional, where they will face the winner of the match between second-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology and third-seeded SUNY Cortland on Saturday at 7:00 pm.

The Generals (28-7) were led by senior outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep), who tallied 11 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) posted nine kills and 16 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) notched nine kills and six blocks. Junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. W&L VOLLEYBALL NABS SIXTH-STRAIGHT ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP (11/4)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s volleyball team defeated Randolph-Macon by a score of 30-28, 30-27, 30-11 in the finals of the 2006 ODAC Championship to win its sixth-consecutive conference title on Saturday in the Warner Center.

The Generals advanced to the finals after a 30-19, 30-21, 30-24 win over fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in the morning semifinal match.

In the championship match, W&L was led by sophomore right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg), who tallied eight kills and five blocks and was named Tournament MVP. Sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) tallied a team-high 12 kills and was named to the All-Tournament team. Senior outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) recorded 11 kills and junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) added 14 digs and three service aces. Freshman setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) registered 21 assists.

In the semifinal win, the Generals were led by Ulrich, who racked up 14 kills, and Maurer, who totaled 12 kills and 15 digs. Stevens added a team-high 24 assists and senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) posted 22 digs and also represented W&L on the All-Tournament team. Freshman middle blocker Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) recorded seven blocks.

The Generals received the ODAC’s automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Tournament and will find out on Monday morning who they will face in the opening round.

The Generals were led by sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer’s (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) 10 kills, 10 digs and three service aces. In the loss to Rhodes (23-10), the Generals were led by junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names), who tallied 15 kills, 15 digs and two service aces. Senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) posted 18 digs to break her own school record for season digs, while junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) amassed 25 assists and two service aces.

In the win over Maryville (23-11), W&L was again paced Hudock, who posted 11 kills, 10 digs and six blocks. MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team improved to 23-6 overall with a 30-23, 30-20, 30-24 win over Huntingdon College on Friday evening in the opening match of the Maryville College Tournament.

The Generals were led by sophomore outside hitter Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), who tallied 12 kills. Sophomore right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) notched 11 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Abbey Wilson (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) totaled six blocks.

W&L VOLLEYBALL UPENDS ROANOKE, 3-1 (10/25)

HOLLINS, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team completed its sixth-straight ODAC regular season without a conference loss by defeating Roanoke College, 30-25, 25-30, 30-18, 30-25, on Wednesday evening on the campus of Hollins University.

W&L, which has now won 62 consecutive regular season conference matches, was led by senior outside hitter Ashley Hurt’s (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) 20 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) tallied 16 kills and 22 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) posted seven blocks. Junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) amassed 30 assists and senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) registered 25 digs and four service aces.

With the win, the Generals improved to 22-6 overall and 10-0 in the ODAC. Roanoke fell to 17-10 overall and 7-3 in the ODAC.

Washington and Lee, which will be the top seed for the upcoming ODAC Tournament, returns to action on Friday as it competes in the Maryville Tournament. The Generals will face Huntingdon at 6:00 pm.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team upped its ODAC regular-season winning streak to 56-straight matches and avenged a non-conference loss to Randolph-Macon over last weekend with a 30-27, 30-26, 29-31, 24-30, 15-13 win over the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals (9-4, 4-0) were paced by sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who tallied 14 kills and 24 digs. Senior Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) posted 12 kills and eight digs, while sophomore right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) added nine kills, 15 digs and six blocks. Freshman middle blocker Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) also tallied nine kills and eight blocks, and junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) chipped in seven kills and 16 digs.

Junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) registered 28 assists and 18 digs, while senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) amassed 32 digs, the second-highest total for a match in school history.

With the loss, Randolph-Macon fell to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday as it hosts Randolph-Macon Woman’s College for a 7:00 pm contest.

W&L VOLLEYBALL DROPS TWO MATCHES AT EMORY TOURNAMENT

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team competed in the second day of the Emory Tournament on Saturday and was defeated in both of its outings, first by Carthage, 17-30, 26-30, 18-30, and then by Randolph-Macon, 25-30, 25-30, 27-30.

In the loss to Carthage, W&L was led by sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who notched nine kills and eight digs, and senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge), who added a team-high 14 digs. Junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) also contributed 14 assists and seven digs.

The loss to Randolph-Macon snapped the Generals’ streak of wins over ODAC opponents at 81-straight. However, W&L has still triumphed over its conference foes in regular-season play 55-straight times, with their last regular-season ODAC loss being to Roanoke in 2000.

In the defeat by the Yellow Jackets, the Generals were paced by Maurer’s 11 kills and eight digs. Junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) registered nine digs and three blocks, while senior outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) totaled nine kills. Rudolph had 21 assists and two aces in the loss.

The Generals (8-4, 3-0 ODAC) look to avenge their loss to the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday when they host R-MC at 7 pm at the Warner Center.

W&L VOLLEYBALL COMPETES AT THE EMORY TOURNAMENT

In the win over Rockford, the Generals were paced by sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who totaled 16 kills, 10 digs and four service aces, and junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names), who amassed a team-high 16 digs and seven kills. Junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) notched 25 assists, eight digs and three blocks, while senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) had eight digs and four services aces. Sophomore outside hitter Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) also added nine kills.

In the loss to the Eagles, Maurer led W&L with eight kills and eight digs. Hudock registered seven kills and seven digs, while Edmonson had nine digs and one service ace. Rudolph also contributed 15 assists.

The Generals (8-2, 3-0 ODAC) continue play in the Emory Tournament tomorrow as they take on Carthage at 2 pm.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team extended its winning streak against ODAC opponents to 81-straight matches with a 30-12, 30-17, 30-18 win over Guilford on Tuesday night at Ragan-Brown Field House in Greensboro, N.C.

W&L was led by sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who posted eight kills and 10 digs, and sophomore right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area), who tallied six kills and nine digs. Senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) recorded a team-high 16 digs, while junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) had 12 digs and two services aces. Sophomore middle blocker Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) also added three blocks.

With the loss, Guilford fell to 2-11 overall and 0-3 in the ODAC.

The Generals (7-1, 3-0 ODAC) continue their 2006 campaign with a trip to Atlanta, Ga. to play in the Emory Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC with a 30-21, 22-30, 30-28, 30-25 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday morning in Virginia Beach, Va.

The Generals were paced by sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who had a team-high 13 kills and 14 digs. Junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) posted nine kills, three service aces and three blocks, while freshmen outside hitters Katie Dunphy (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) and Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) notched eight kills each. Junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team dropped its first match of the season, falling at Christopher Newport, 30-17, 28-30, 30-26, 30-25 on Friday evening.

The Generals (5-1) were paced by sophomore outside hitter Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), who had 15 kills and five digs. Junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) posted nine kills and nine digs, while senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) notched 20 digs. Junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) added a team-best 23 assists and eight digs.

With the win, the Captains improved to 5-6 overall on the season.

W&L returns to action on Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan at 11:00 am.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team upped its winning streak against ODAC opponents to 79-straight matches with a 30-15, 30-22, 30-11 win over Emory & Henry on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals (5-0, 1-0), who haven’t lost a match to an ODAC school since the 2000 ODAC Championship match, amassed 22 service aces in the contest led by freshman outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) and junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names), who each had five. Phillips added five kills and five blocks, while Hudock also contributed seven digs.

Sophomore right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) posted a team-high eight kills and eight digs and sophomore outside hitter Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) notched seven kills. Freshman setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) had a team-high 18 assists, while senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) registered a team-best nine digs.

With the loss, the Wasps dropped to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the ODAC.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday evening when it travels to Christopher Newport for a 6:00 pm contest. The Generals will also play at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at noon.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team won both of its matches in the second day of the 16th annual W&L Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center. The Generals defeated McDaniel, 30-23, 30-24, 30-17, then downed UVA-Wise, 30-21, 30-15, 30-9, to emerge from their opening weekend undefeated.

W&L (4-0) was represented by four players on the All-Tournament Team, including the MVP senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge). Edmonson was joined by sophomore right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area), sophomore middle blocker Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) and junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names).

In the win over McDaniel (4-2), the Generals were paced by Hudock, who tallied 12 digs, 10 digs and five blocks, Ulrich, who notched 16 digs and seven kills, and Edmonson, who had 17 digs. Junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft, Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) recorded 17 assists and freshman setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) registered 12 assists and seven digs.

In the win over UVA-Wise (3-4), Hudock amassed 10 service aces to tie the Washington and Lee record for service aces in a match set by Christine Gladysz ‘06 in 2003. Sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) notched nine kills and four blocks, while Edmonson recorded 11 digs. Rudolph paced the Generals with 17 assists, while Stevens had 13 assists in the win.

The Generals continue their 2006 campaign on Wednesday as they open up ODAC action hosting Emory & Henry at 7 pm in the Warner Center.
