W&L VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO EMORY, 3-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team saw its season end with a 30-27, 30-25, 30-27 loss to Emory University in the NCAA Division III Tournament at Trinity University.

The Generals held late leads in all three games, but could not hold on for the win. Junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) led the way with 11 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) registered 10 kills. Junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) notched eight kills and five digs and sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 34 assists and seven digs.

Katrina Damasco paced Emory with 15 kills. Jolene Litzman recorded 11 kills, while Remley Dodge added 45 assists.

The loss ended W&L’s campaign with a 35-4 overall record. Emory improved to 30-12 and will play the winner of the Trinity-East Texas Baptist match on Saturday at 7:00 pm.

W&L VOLLEYBALL WINS NCAA TOURNAMENT OPENER

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team won its opener in the 2003 NCAA Division III Tournament by defeating Averett, 25-30, 30-18, 30-17, 30-21, on Thursday evening at Trinity University.

The Generals (35-3) were led by junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who totaled a match-high 19 kills and 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) tallied 18 kills and 18 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) registered 16 kills. Sophomore right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) added nine kills, 11 digs and five service aces. Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed a career-high 65 assists and 12 digs.

Averett (31-10) was paced by Courtney Carrington, who totaled 12 kills and seven digs. Jeri Hughes added 18 digs.

W&L will take on Emory University (29-12) in the round of 32 on Friday evening at 5:00 pm CST. The Generals and Eagles have met twice this season, with each team taking one match. W&L defeated Emory by a 3-0 count on Sep. 13, while the Eagles won 3-1 on Sep. 27.

W&L VOLLEYBALL WINS FIFTH ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP IN SIX YEARS

ASHLAND, Va. -- Top-seeded Washington and Lee claimed its fifth ODAC Volleyball Championship in the last six years as the Generals defeated third-seeded Bridgewater, 30-28, 23-30, 30-23, 30-14 in the title match on Saturday afternoon.

Washington and Lee (34-23) advanced to the final round of the ODAC tournament after besting fourth-seeded Roanoke, 30-21, 30-19, 30-22, in the semifinals earlier in the day.

Junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) earned tournament MVP honors, and was joined on the all-tournament squad by fellow General, sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep).

Against Roanoke, W&L was led by sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud), who tallied 15 kills. Junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) recorded 13 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) contributed 10 kills and five assists. Gladysz had 47 assists, 15 digs and one ace in the victory, and junior libero Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) added 15 digs.

In the title match, Gaillard had 13 kills and three blocks, while Wolfing amassed 12 kills, 18 digs and two aces. Gladysz recorded 46 assists, three blocks and four aces, while Lux had 15 digs and Chastain had nine kills. Byrne contributed 13 digs and two aces, while sophomore middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) added four blocks. Sophomore setter Virginia Baird (Houston, Texas/Lamar) connected on five aces.

With the win, W&L advances to the first round of the NCAA South Regional, hosted by Trinity in San Antonio, Texas. The third-seeded Generals will face sixth-seeded Averett on Thursday. Match time has yet to be determined.

W&L VOLLEYBALL DOWNS VIRGINIA WESLEYAN, 3-0, IN ODAC TOURNAMENT

ASHLAND, Va. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team began the defense of its 2002 ODAC Championship with a 30-24, 30-18, 30-17 win over eighth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the ODAC tournament on Friday evening at Randolph-Macon.

The Generals (32-3) were led by junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 12 kills, five digs and four aces. Sophomore right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) notched seven kills, while junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) recorded eight kills and four aces. Sophomore middle blockers Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) and Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) added seven kills and six blocks respectively. Sophomore Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) rounded out the W&L leaders with 33 assists and five aces.

The loss ended Virginia Wesleyan’s season at 17-10 overall.

Washington and Lee will face fourth-seeded Roanoke on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The championship match will be played at 3:00 p.m.

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team posted a 4-0 record for the weekend to win the Maryville Invitational. On Saturday, the Generals defeated Emory & Henry, 30-19, 30-21, 30-23 and then downed Centre, 27-30, 30-28, 30-17, 33-31.

Against the Wasps (13-12), W&L was paced by freshman outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep), who recorded 13 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) totaled 13 kills as well, while junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) notched nine kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 54 assists and 16 digs to set a new W&L record for career assists.

In the win over Centre, the Generals were led by Wolfing, who totaled 21 kills, 13 digs and six blocks. Junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) tallied 16 kills, 21 digs and four blocks, while Gaillard registered 13 kills and four blocks. Gladysz recorded 60 assists, 14 digs and three blocks. Her career assist total now stands at 2,258, breaking the record of 2,192 held by Ali Beard since the 1997 season.

The Generals (31-3) will be in action again on Friday in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament hosted by Randolph-Macon. W&L, the top seed, will face a yet to be determined opponent.

W&L VOLLEYBALL WINS TWO AT MARYVILLE INVITATIONAL

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team upped its record to 29-3 overall with a pair of wins in the opening day of the Maryville Invitational on Friday. The Generals downed Milligan, 30-15, 30-15, 30-17, before taking down host Maryville, 30-24, 25-30, 30-26, 30-28.

In the win over Milligan (9-24), the Generals were led by sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud), who totaled 14 kills. Junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) recorded 10 kills and four service aces, while junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) notched seven kills and 17 digs. Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 42 assists and four aces.

In the win over Maryville (29-6), W&L was paced by Wolfing, who tallied 18 kills and 25 digs. Gaillard registered 19 kills and eight digs, while Chastain recorded 14 kills and 19 digs. Freshman libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) notched 12 digs and Gladysz added 52 assists, 17 digs and three aces.

The win over Maryville avenged an earlier 3-2 loss by the Generals to the Fighting Scots.

With her 94 assists on Friday, Gladysz climbed to within 49 assists of breaking the W&L career assist record (2,192) held by Ali Beard since the 1997 season.

W&L will continue action in the Maryville Invitational on Saturday as it takes on Emory & Henry at 10:00 am and Centre at 12:30 pm.

W&L VOLLEYBALL FINISHES ODAC REGULAR SEASON UNBEATEN

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated Lynchburg, 30-24, 30-15, 30-15 on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center to finish the ODAC regular season schedule undefeated for the third straight season.

The Generals are now 27-3 overall, 11-0 in the ODAC and will be the top seed for the ODAC Tournament held Nov. 7-8 at Randolph-Macon College.

In the win over LC (14-10, 7-4), W&L was paced by junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep), who totaled 12 kills and nine digs. She now claims 1,010 career kills and is the fourth W&L volleyball player to eclipse the 1,000 career kills mark.

Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) notched 45 assists and eight digs in the match and surpassed the W&L record for season assists (1,186) set by junior Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) during the 2001 season. Gladysz now claims 1,209 assists on the season and can break the W&L career record with 143 more assists. Her career total stands at 2,050.

Junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) recorded 19 kills and nine digs, while sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) added 10 kills and four blocks.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday as it participates in the Maryville Invitational. The Generals take on Milligan at 3:30 pm and then square off against Maryville at 6:00 pm.

W&L VOLLEYBALL DOWNS RANDOLPH-MACON, 3-1; SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) surpassed the 1,000 mark in career digs as the Washington and Lee volleyball team improved to 26-3 overall, 10-0 in the ODAC with a pair of wins on Saturday.

The Generals started the day with a 3-1 win over Randolph-Macon (21-4, 8-1), defeating the Yellow Jackets, 30-18, 30-21, 26-30, 30-28. Washington and Lee then wrapped up the day with a 3-0 victory over Southern Virginia (17-15), downing the Knights 30-20, 30-26, 30-19.

In the match against Randolph-Macon, Wolfing and fellow junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) led the way with 20 kills each. Wolfing added 20 digs, while Chastain added 14 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) had 17 kills and sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) finished the match with 58 assists and 11 digs.

In the match against Southern Virginia, Wolfing surpassed the 1,000 career digs mark with 11 digs, while recording nine kills. Gaillard added 10 kills, while Chastain and sophomore right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) each had seven kills. Gladysz recorded 40 assists and junior libero Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) added 13 digs.

Radolph-Macon defeated Southern Virginia 3-2 with game scores of 30-25, 27-30, 30-26, 23-30 and 15-12.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday, when the Generals host Lynchburg. Match time is 6:30 p.m.

ROANOKE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team improved to 24-3 overall, 9-0 in the ODAC with a 30-19, 30-17, 30-12 win over Hollins on Thursday evening.

Sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) led the way, recording 13 kills. Junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) notched 10 kills and sophomore middle blocker Ashleigh Overly (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) added nine kills. Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 30 assists and six digs.

Gladysz’ 30 assists moves her to within 120 assists of the W&L season record (1,186) set by then-freshman Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) in 2001.

The loss dropped Hollins to 5-18 overall, 0-10 in the ODAC.

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) set a new program record for service aces in a match as the Washington and Lee volleyball team recorded a pair of victories and one loss at the Marymount Tournament on Saturday. The Generals fell to Susquehanna, 3-1, in the opening match, then rebounded to defeat Averett and Emory & Henry, 3-0.

The Generals (23-3) dropped the decision to Susquehanna with game scores of 30-11, 27-30, 25-30 and 24-30. Washington and Lee then defeated Averett, 30-27, 30-16, 30-19, and Emory & Henry, 30-20, 30-23, 30-23.

In the match against Susquehanna, junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) recorded 17 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) notched 15 kills and five blocks. Gladysz added 42 assists and 13 digs.

Against Averett, Gaillard led the way with 14 kills, while Wolfing recorded 13 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) posted eight kills and six blocks.

In W&L’s win over Emory & Henry, Gladysz recorded a triple-double, amassing 49 assists, 12 digs and 10 aces. Her 10 aces stand as a new program record, besting the previous record of nine held by Lee Charbonnet since 1998 and Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) since 2002. Gaillard added 14 kills, while Chastain had 12 kills and Wolfing had nine kills.

The win marked W&L’s sixth-straight 20-win season and was the Generals’ 28th consecutive ODAC regular season victory.

Junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) led the Generals past the Marlins (12-5, 1-4) by totaling 14 kills and 13 digs. SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team finished the Savannah Art & Design Invitational with a perfect 5-0 record after defeating Guilford (30-13, 30-21, 30-17), Southern Virginia (30-23, 30-20, 30-20) and Savannah A&D (30-23, 30-19, 30-21) on Saturday afternoon.

Junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) and freshman outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) were all named to the all-tournament team.

Against Guilford, the Generals (19-2) were paced by Hurt’s 11 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) totaled 10 kills and four blocks, while Wolfing notched nine kills and 10 digs. Gladysz amassed 41 assists.

Against Southern Virginia, Hurt again led the way with 14 kills and 14 digs, while Gaillard totaled 15 kills and Wolfing registered 10 kills and 17 digs. Gladysz had 42 assists and junior libero Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) totaled 13 digs.

In the match with SCAD, Wolfing notched 12 kills and 15 digs. Gaillard totaled 13 kills and five blocks, while Hurt recorded 11 kills and 12 digs. Wolfing added 12 kills and 15 digs and Gladysz had 41 assists, 10 digs and four blocks.

Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 52 assists.

In the loss to Emory, Wolfing led the way with 11 kills and 17 digs, while Gaillard totaled 10 kills. Junior libero Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) recorded 19 digs and Gladysz registered 31 assists and 18 digs.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Guilford for a 6:30 pm contest.

W&L VOLLEYBALL SPLITS IN DAY ONE OF THE EMORY INVITATIONAL

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team saw its nine-match winning-streak snapped with a 30-28, 27-30, 24-30, 30-27, 13-15 loss to Maryville in the opening day of the Emory Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Generals began the tournament with a 30-23, 30-27, 30-19 win over Transylvania.

In the win over Transylvania (0-13), the Generals were led by junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep), who amassed 14 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore middle blockers Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Ashleigh Overly (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) recorded 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) notched 20 digs. Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 38 assists.

In the loss to Maryville (14-0), Chastain again led the way with 16 kills and 22 digs. Gaillard totaled 15 kills, while sophomore right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Acad.) registered 12 kills and 16 digs. Gladysz recorded 57 assists and 11 digs.

The Generals (9-1) return to action in the second day of the Emory Invitational on Saturday. W&L plays East Texas Baptist (11:30 am) and host Emory (2:00 pm).

W&L VOLLEYBALL DOWNS RANDOLPH-MACON WOMAN’S, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) totaled 11 kills and six digs to lead Washington and Lee past Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, 30-23, 30-15, 30-25 in ODAC volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.

The win improved W&L to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the ODAC, tying a record for the best start in school history. It also marked W&L’s 24th straight regular season ODAC victory.

Sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) supplimented Wolfing’s effort with nine kills and four blocks, while freshman libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) notched 11 digs. Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 35 assists and 10 digs.
With the loss, RMWC fell to 4-7 overall, 1-2 in the ODAC.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday as it travels to Atlanta, Ga., to participate in the Emory Classic. W&L plays Transylvania (11:30 am) and Maryville (2:00 pm) in the first day’s action.

W&L VOLLEYBALL BESTS EASTERN MENNONITE, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated Eastern Mennonite, 3-0, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday to stay perfect on the season with a 7-0 overall record and a 3-0 ODAC mark. The Generals defeated the Royals with game scores of 30-20, 30-15 and 30-21.

Junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) recorded 16 kills and nine digs and sophomore right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) added seven kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) had 24 assists and 10 digs.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team won all three games against Emory to seal the W&L Tournament championship on Saturday. The Generals (4-0) downed Savannah College of Art & Design, 26-30, 30-28, 30-28, 30-25, and defeated Emory in the title match, 30-21, 30-27 and 42-40.

In the win over Emory (10-2), junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) led the way with 15 kills and 24 digs. Junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) recorded 10 kills and 16 digs in the victory, while sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) had 43 assists and 16 digs.

Chastain and Gladysz both earned a spot on the all-tournament squad for their weekend efforts, with Gladysz earning the tournament MVP honors.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday, September 16 when the Generals open their Old Dominion Athletic Conference schedule on the road at Sweet Briar. Match time is 6:30 p.m.

Airy, Md./South Carroll) led the way with 10 kills and 17 digs, while junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) totaled 12 kills.
