W&L DROPS HEARTBREAKER IN ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH (11/4)

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team advanced to the ODAC Championship match with a 16-14, 20-18, 13-15, 15-7 semifinal win over Roanoke before dropping a heartbreaking 15-11, 15-13, 12-15, 7-15, 18-20 match to Bridgewater in the finals.

W&L led the Eagles 14-11 in the final game of the championship match before a BC comeback.

Against Roanoke, the Generals were led by junior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart), who totaled 21 kills, 12 digs and six blocks. Junior outside hitter Leslie Fischbeck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) totaled 18 kills and eight blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Stacey Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) notched 11 kills and 13 digs.

Senior setters Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) and Katherine Kline (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) posted 30 and 20 assists, respectively.

In the championship match against Bridgewater, W&L was again led by Ruckert, who tallied 27 kills and four blocks. Fischbeck amassed 26 kills and eight blocks, while freshman outside hitter Kari Lassen (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads) notched 14 digs. Kimmel added 13 digs as well.

Saulsbury totaled 28 assists, while Kline tallied 27 assists and 12 digs.

Ruckert and Fischbeck were both named to the all-tournament team.

Washington and Lee ends its season with a 20-10 overall record.

W&L VOLLEYBALL WINS ODAC TOURNAMENT OPENER OVER GUILFORD (11/3)

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team, three-time defending ODAC champion, began its defense of last seasonÕs title with a 15-4, 15-9, 15-9 win over Guilford in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament.

The Generals (19-9) were led by junior outside hitter Leslie Fischbeck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills), who totaled 13 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Stacey Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) notched 10 kills, 14 digs and two blocks, while junior outside hitter Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) tallied nine kills, nine digs and two blocks.

Senior setters Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) and Katherine Kline (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) posted 20 and 16 assists, respectively.

Washington and Lee will face the winner of the Roanoke-Lynchburg match in the semifinals on Saturday morning at 10:30 am. The championship match is slated to begin at 3:00 pm.

W&L VOLLEYBALL DROPS TWO IN AVERETT TOURNAMENT (10/28)

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team posted a win over Roanoke, 15-8, 12-15, 14-16, 15-2, 15-6, but dropped matches to Savannah A&D (6-15, 5-15, 11-15) and Maryville (12-15, 7-15, 12-15) in the second day of the Averett College Invitational on Saturday.

Against Roanoke, the Generals were led by junior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart), who totaled 18 kills, 13 digs, and eight blocks. Junior outside hitter Leslie Fischbeck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) amassed 17 kills and nine blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Stacey Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) added 26 digs and six blocks.

Senior setters Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) and Katherine Kline (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) notched 21 and 26 assists, respectively. Saulsbury added 13 digs.

In the loss to Savannah A&D, Ruckert again led the Generals with 14 kills and eight digs. Fischbeck totaled 11 kills and three blocks, while Kimmel and freshman outside hitter Mary-Wommack Barton (Austin, Texas/St. StephenÕs) notched 14 and 13 digs, respectively. Saulsbury totaled 21 assists.

Against Maryville, junior outside hitter Lee Charbonnet (New Orleans, La./Benjamin Franklin) totaled seven kills and three blocks, while Fischbeck totaled six kills and four blocks. Saulsbury recorded 12 assists and nine digs.

W&L will be in action again on Friday as it participates in the ODAC Tournament held at Lynchburg College. Opponent and time will be determined early in the week.

ROANOKE DOWNS WASHINGTON AND LEE IN VOLLEYBALL, 3-0 (10/25)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Roanoke defeated Washington and Lee, 15-4, 15-7, 15-6, in front of an estimated crowd of 1,850 in women's volleyball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The game was W&L's first since losing freshman outside hitter Kristin Shelton (Austin, Texas/McCallum) in a fatal vehicle accident on Sunday morning and marked Roanoke's first win over W&L since 1991 and the first time Washington and Lee has lost to an ODAC opponent at home since the 1994 season.

The Generals (17-6, 8-2) were led by junior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart), who totaled 10 kills, nine digs, and two blocks. Junior outside hitter Leslie Fischbeck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) notched nine kills and seven blocks as well.

Senior setter Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) amassed a team-high 13 assists.

The win upped RoanokeÕs record to 15-7 overall, 7-2 in the ODAC.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team won its 10th match in a row, defeating Hollins, 15-4, 15-6, 15-6, on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.

Junior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) and freshman outside hitter Kristin Shelton (Austin, Texas/McCallum) led the Generals' offense 11 kills each.

Junior outside hitter Sara Heusel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Novi) and sophomore outside hitter Stacey Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) each collected seven digs, while senior setter Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) notched a team-high 17 assists.

The Generals (17-5, 8-1) will be in action again on Tuesday as it hosts Roanoke in a 6:30 pm contest.

W&L VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS SWEET BRIAR, 3-0 (10/18)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team won its ninth match in a row, defeating Sweet Briar, 15-0, 15-9, 15-1, on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals served out all 15 points in the first game and cruised from that point on.

Freshman outside hitter Kristin Shelton (Austin, Texas/McCallum) led the GeneralsÕ offense with six kills in 10 attempts. She also totaled two blocks and one ace.

Junior outside hitter Lee Charbonnet (New Orleans, La./Benjamin Franklin) tallied three kills and a team-high six digs, while senior setter Katherine Kline (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) notched six aces and 12 assists.

The Generals improved to 16-5 overall, 7-1 in the ODAC, while Sweet Briar fell to 3-18 overall, 1-7 in the ODAC.

W&L VOLLEYBALL WINS GOUCHER INVITATIONAL WITH A 4-0 RECORD (10/14)

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team won the championship of the Goucher Invitational on Saturday, posting a 4-0 record. The Generals defeated Goucher, 15-3, 15-5, 15-8, Mary Washington, 15-2, 15-9, 15-8, Dickinson, 15-8, 15-11, 15-5, and Mary Washington again, 15-8, 15-12, 15-13 to win the tournament.

Junior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) was named the tournament MVP, while senior outside hitter Tori Hays (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) was also named to the all-tournament team.

Against Goucher, Ruckert led the Generals (15-5) with 10 kills, 10 digs, and four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Kristin Shelton (Austin, Texas/McCallum) chipped in with 10 kills and three blocks and senior setter Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) amassed 17 assists.

In the first match against Mary Washington, Ruckert tallied 13 kills and Shelton notched 12 kills and four blocks. Hays posted 10 digs, while Saulsbury collected 23 assists.

Ruckert again led the Generals in the win over Dickinson, posting seven kills. Sophomore outside hitter Stacey Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) added six kills and nine digs.

In W&LÕs second match with Mary Washington, Shelton led the team with 16 kills, while Ruckert totaled 11 kills and nine digs. Kimmel notched 15 digs and Saulsbury contributed 23 assists.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts Sweet Briar in an ODAC contest. The match is slated to begin at 6:30 pm.

HARRISONBURG, Va.. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team outlasted Eastern Mennonite for a 3-2 win on Tuesday evening in Harrisonburg. The Generals prevailed 15-12, 15-12, 11-15, 17-19, 15-13 to up their record to 11-5 overall, 6-1 in the ODAC. Eastern Mennonite fell to 8-8 overall, 4-3 in the ODAC.

W&L was led by freshman outside hitter Kristin Shelton (Austin, Texas/McCallum), who totaled 10 kills. LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore outside hitter Kristin Shelton (Austin, Texas/McCallum) notched 12 kills to lead Washington and Lee to a, 15-4, 15-3, 15-3, victory over Randolph-Macon Women's College on Saturday afternoon in ODAC volleyball action.

Senior setter Katherine Kline (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms School) and sophomore outside hitter Stacy Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) recorded four aces each in the victory. Kline and senior setter Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) also added 10 assists each.

The Generals (7-4) were defeated by Greensboro College, 9-15, 16-14, 11-15, 15-17 in the opening match, before dropping a 5-15, 11-15, 6-15 match to third-ranked Emory University in the nightcap.

Against Greensboro, W&L was led by junior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart), who tallied 19 kills. Junior middle blocker Leslie Fischbeck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) notched 16 kills and three blocks, while senior outside hitter Tori Hays (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) and sophomore outside hitter Stacey Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) each amassed 13 digs.

The Generals (7-2, 3-1) were led by senior outside hitter Tori Hays (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe), who totaled six kills and nine digs. Sophomore outside hitter Stacey Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) notched four kills and a team-high 10 digs, while junior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) tallied a team-best six aces.

Junior middle blocker Leslie Fischbeck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) was tops on the team in kills (7) and was set up by senior Katherine Kline (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms), who amassed 11 assists.

Guilford dropped to 3-10, 1-3 in the ODAC.

EMORY, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated Emory & Henry, 15-12, 15-10, 15-12, on Tuesday evening in Emory, Va.

The Generals (4-2, 1-1) trailed 10-5 in the second game, but reeled off 10 straight points to win the game and cruise to its first ODAC victory of the season.

Junior outside hitter Leslie Fischbeck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) led W&L with 12 kills, while junior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) totaled nine kills and three blocks. Senior setters Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) and Katherine Kline (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) combined for 29 assists, 12 and 17, respectively.

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team had a 23-match regular-season win streak against ODAC opponents snapped by Lynchburg College, 15-7, 15-12, 15-4, on Wednesday evening in Lynchburg, Va.

The Generals had not lost a regular-season ODAC tilt since dropping a 3-1 decision to Guilford on Oct. 16, 1997.

Washington and Lee (3-2, 0-1) was led by junior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart), who tallied eight kills and three blocks. Senior setter Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) recorded a team-high 13 assists.

With the win, Lynchburg moves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the ODAC.
