LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) registered her 1,000th career kill, and the Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated DeSales, 3-1, on Friday on the first day of the W&L Invitational at the Duchossois Tennis Center.

In the opening set, the teams were tied late, 23-23, but back-to-back kills by Guignon gave the Generals (1-4) the edge in the first, 25-23. W&L led the Bulldogs (4-2), 18-15, toward the end of the second, and then the Generals ripped off seven straight points to win the set, 25-15, highlighted by two kills from sophomore outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) and two aces by senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard).

Guignon's milestone kill came midway through the third set. With the score knotted at 17-17, she tipped the ball over two blockers and it hit the floor just in front of a diving Bulldog. Unfortunately, DeSales ended the set on an 8-3 spurt to take the third, 25-21.

In the fourth, the teams exchanged points through the early part of the set. With the score tied at 13-13, a kill by Gould ignited a 6-0 run to give the Blue and White a 19-13 lead. DeSales never recovered, as the Generals pulled away for the 25-15 victory in the set to clinch the match.

Guignon led all players with 15 kills and added 14 digs. She now has 1,005 kills over her four seasons. She is just the 12th player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill plateau, and is just the sixth General to total at least 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) paced the back row with a career-best 21 digs. She also had five kills on just nine attempts (.556 hitting percentage), four assists and five blocks. Cosgrove registered 17 digs and six service aces.

Juniors Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) and Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) split the setting duties for the Blue and White. Soroka had 15 assists and seven digs, while Ray notched 14 assists and eight digs.
