LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) totaled a season-high 15 kills to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Maryville at the W&L Invitational on Friday.
The Generals (5-1) took command of the match from the initial serve, as they scored the first 10 points of the opening set. During the run, first-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) recorded four service aces and Berry had two kills. W&L eventually won the first, 25-13.
The Scots (2-3) controlled most of the second and held a 19-16 lead late in the set. The Blue and White responded with a 8-0 run to grab a 24-19 advantage. Following two points by Maryville, W&L secured the second, 25-21.
In the third, the Scots dominated the stanza. Maryville hit .519 as a team with 17 kills on 27 attempts with just three errors. Conversely, the Generals hit just .129 in the set, as the Scots took the third, 25-18. W&L rebounded in the fourth and closed out the match, 25-14, in the set.
Berry notched her 15 kills, while hitting .565. She needed just 23 attempts and committed just two errors. She also had six blocks. Junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs, while hitting .310.
Sophomore outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) notched 10 kills and hit .444. Senior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) had 23 assists, which moves her into a tie for fifth on the W&L all-time assists list with 1,925. Kristi Stevens '10 ended her career with the same number of assists.
Senior outside hitter Nia Haller led Maryville with 13 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Brianne Sidner had 11 kills and seven digs.
On Saturday, the Generals host Southern Virginia at 10:30 am and then Meredith at 3:30 pm for their final two matches of the W&L Invitational.
