W&L Volleyball Tops Covenant, 3-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) registered 22 digs, and first-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) notched her first collegiate double-double to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Covenant on Saturday at the Birmingham Southern McAttack Bash.

In the first set, neither team could gain any separation, as the largest lead by either squad was three points. The score was eventually tied, 23-23, but the Scots (1-1) tallied the final two points on a W&L service error and a kill by junior outside hitter Hannah Harris to win the set, 25-23.

In the second, the Generals (3-1) held a 6-5 advantage, but pushed the lead to 11-6 after five straight points. W&L continued to extend the margin the rest of the set and evened the match, 1-1, by taking the second, 25-16.

The Blue and White held another 6-5 edge in the third, and this time scored seven of the next 10 points to grab a 13-8 lead. The rest of the set mirrored the second and the Generals claimed the third, 25-16.

W&L carried the momentum into the fourth and scored the first six points en route to winning the set, 25-18. With Volk's 22 digs, she moved her career total to 1,130. She is now eighth on the W&L all-time list, as she passed Laura Maurer '09 (1,109) and Kelly McManus '15 (1,129) during the match. M.A. Boles '14 is seventh all-time with 1,412 digs.

Gould recorded a season-best 17 kills and 13 digs for her double-double. She also had four blocks, while hitting .311. Sophomore outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) tallied 10 kills, and junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) added nine kills and nine digs. Sophomore setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) led the team with 19 assists. 

Senior outside hitter Ginny Moore paced Covenant with 12 kills and 19 digs. Harris had eight kills, and senior setter Schuyler Moore registered 28 assists and 13 digs.

The Generals next compete on Friday, when they host the W&L Invitational. The Blue and White will face 16th-ranked Eastern at 5:00 pm and Maryville at 7:30 pm.
