BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Behind four blocks and a .500 hitting percentage from first-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle), the Washington and Lee volleyball team opened the 2017 season with a 3-0 victory over Maryville at the Birmingham Southern McAttack Bash.
The Generals (1-0) won the first set, 25-19, and then took the second, 25-20. W&L made quick work of the Scots (0-1) in the third, 25-13, to claim the match.
Berry had six kills on 12 attempts with no errors, along with her four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) totaled seven kills on 20 attempts with no errors to record a .350 hitting percentage. First-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) also had seven kills along with eight digs.
Senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) led all players with 18 digs, while junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) totaled six kills and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) tallied 12 assists and senior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) had 11. First-year outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) notched six kills, three aces and two digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Dejané Hester-Taylor led Maryville with seven kills and nine digs. Sophomore setter Saidee McDaniel registered 18 assists.
The Generals played Birmingham Southern later on Friday.
