LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team's comeback from a 2-0 deficit fell short on Friday, as the Generals lost to Lynchburg, 3-2, at the Warner Center.
The Hornets (14-7, 6-1 ODAC) took control of the match by winning the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-21. W&L (16-5, 6-2 ODAC) was in an early hole in the third, 8-6, but went on a 9-2 run, capped on back-to-back aces by first-year outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot), to take a 15-10 advantage. The Blue and White maintained a lead the rest of the set, claiming it 25-17.
In the fourth, the Generals scored the first four points to force a Hornets' timeout. Lynchburg would eventually take a 13-12 advantage, but W&L reeled off nine straight points en route to taking the stanza, 25-20.
The Hornets regained a command of the match in the fifth by winning five of the first seven points. Lynchburg held a 10-7 advantage later in the set, and won five of the final six points to take the set, 15-8, and win the match.
Sophomore outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) led the Generals with 14 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) had 11 kills, nine digs and four assists. First-year outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) totaled 11 kills and nine digs.
Senior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) recorded eight kills and five blocks. First-year setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) tallied 23 assists, four aces and three digs, while sophomore setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) collected 19 assists and four digs. With the 19 assists, West pushed her career total to 1,760 to move to seventh on the W&L all-time list.
Junior outside hitter Mesa Willis led the Hornets with a match-high 15 kills. Junior setter Lynn Walsh had a double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs. First-year libero Lauren Stanford also had a double-double with 14 digs and 10 assists, and senior outside hitter Jen Garrett totaled 13 kills and eight digs.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host Randolph at 11:00 am and Dallas at 4:00 pm.
