LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore outside hitters Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C. / John T. Hoggard) each recorded double-doubles to pace the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at the Warner Center.
Guignon totaled a match-high 17 kills, a season-high 22 digs and three aces, while Cosgrove had 15 kills, a career-best 25 digs and three aces.
The Generals (14-1, 5-0 ODAC) entered the fourth set with a 2-1 lead. The Marlins (8-10, 1-3 ODAC) grabbed a 13-9 advantage, and forced a W&L timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Blue and White scored six straight points to grab a 15-13 lead.
VWC closed the gap to 15-14, but the Generals tallied four more points, capped on a kill by senior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline), to take a commanding 19-14 advantage.
The Blue and White would go on to win the set, 25-19, and claim the match. W&L won the first set, 25-20, but the Marlins claimed the second, 27-25. The Blue and White took the third, 25-19.
Junior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) totaled a match-high 42 assists to go with six digs. She pushed her career total to 1,660 assists to move to ninth on the W&L all-time list. Pam Saulsbury '01 is eighth with 1,722 assists.
Junior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) notched 14 digs and three assists. First-year outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) had seven kills, three digs, three blocks and two service aces.
Senior outside hitter Tiffany Barrett led VWC with 15 kills and seven digs. Junior defensive specialist Allison Mackley registered a match-high 27 digs.
The Generals hosted Marymount later on Saturday.
