LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) recorded a match-high 13 kills to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 ODAC victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday at the Warner Center.
In the opening set the two teams went back and forth with the Generals (12-1, 3-0 ODAC) holding a 21-18 advantage. W&L then scored four straight points, capped on a service ace by junior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill), to take the set, 25-18.
W&L made quick work of the Hornets (7-7, 1-2 ODAC) in the second, 25-11. Shenandoah bounced back in the third, even fighting off four match points, but with the Blue and White leading, 28-27, first-year outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) ended the set (29-27) and the match with a kill down the line.
Cosgrove needed only 27 attempts and committed just three errors (.370 hitting percentage) to tally her 13 kills. Webb also had double-digit kills with 10.
Senior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) had eight kills on 16 attempts with only one error (.438 hitting percentage). She also had a match-high eight blocks, which extended her streak of matches with at least five blocks to six.
The Generals registered a .326 hitting percentage with 42 kills on 92 attempts with only 12 errors. The Hornets hit .125 with 29 kills on 80 attempts with 19 errors.
Junior outside hitters Elizabeth Lamont and Kaitlyn Kelley each had six kills to lead Shenandoah. Kelley also had a match-high eight digs.
The Generals next compete on Tuesday, when they play at Roanoke at 6:30 pm.
