LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team made quick work of St. Mary's (Md.), 3-0, on Saturday to claim the 2016 W&L Invitational at the Warner Center.
In the first, the Seahawks (6-3) led 15-10, but the Generals (7-1) scored five straight points to even the set, 15-15. W&L gained a 23-18 advantage, and then closed out the set off an attack error by SMC and an ace by junior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside).
The two teams went back-and-forth in the second frame, but the Blue and White pulled away from the Seahawks by scoring seven of the final 10 points to claim the set, 25-20. In the third, the Generals jumped out to a 10-2 lead and held on for a 25-13 victory.
Sophomore outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and senior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) headlined a balanced attack for the Blue and White. Guignon had 12 kills and six digs, while Shand notched 12 kills and five blocks. For their play over the course of the four matches at the W&L Invitational, Guignon was named the Tournament MVP and Shand was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Junior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) led all players with 17 digs and added three service aces. West notched a match-high 31 assists and contributed seven digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Meghan Kelley led the Seahawks with eight kills and senior setter Mimi Graf had 19 assists and 10 digs.
The Generals next travel to Averett on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm contest.
