LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) and sophomore outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) each tallied double-digit kills to lead the W&L volleyball team over Southern Virginia, 3-1, at the Warner Center on Saturday as part of the W&L Invitational.
The Generals (6-1) took the first set, 25-19, but the Knights (0-4) responded in the second. SVU jumped out to a 5-1 lead and held a 20-16 advantage late in the stanza.
The Blue and White scored seven of the next eight points, highlighted by two kills from Guignon, to grab a 23-21 advantage. The Knights evened the set at 25-25, but back-to-back kills by sophomore outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) and Shand gave the Generals a 27-25 win in the set.
SVU found its footing in the third, coming back from a 20-13 deficit to claim the set, 25-23. During the Knights' 12-3 run to close the frame, junior outside hitter Hannah Allred and sophomore outside Allison Tiegs each recorded three kills. The Generals bounced back in the fourth with a 25-16 win. W&L hit .348 in the set to close out the match.
For the match, Shand notched 12 kills on 26 attempts with one errors for a .423 hitting percentage. She also recorded five digs and four blocks. With the four blocks, she moved to fifth on the W&L career list with 327. She passed current W&L assistant coach Taylor Gibson '06, who finished her career with 325. Lindsey Dee '12 is currently fourth with 339 blocks.
Guignon registered 14 kills and seven digs, while junior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) had a match-high 38 assists and five digs. Junior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) tallied a team-high 14 digs.
Allred recorded a match-high 17 kills. The Knights had four players with double-digit digs, led by first-year defensive specialist's Mykynli Richard's match-high 16.
The Generals played St. Mary's later on Saturday for their final match of the W&L Invitational.
