LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) tallied a match-high 13 kills to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Averett as part of the W&L Invitational on Friday.
The win improved the Generals to 5-1 overall and the loss was the first of the season for the Cougars (6-1). In the first set, W&L was up 3-2 after five points, but then rolled off six straight points to grab a 9-2 advantage. Averett closed the gap to two, 22-20, but two service errors and a kill by first-year outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) gave the Blue and White the set, 25-21.
The second was tied, 6-6, but the Generals used a 7-0 run, highlighted by two kills from Webb, to take a 13-7 lead, and the team held on for a 25-20 win in the stanza. W&L made quick work of AU in the third, 25-14, to take the contest, 3-0.
Guignon tallied her 13 kills on 27 attempts with four errors for a .333 hitting percentage. She also added six digs and two blocks. Webb notched nine kills, three digs and four blocks.
Sophomore defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) totaled a match-high 11 digs and two service assists, and junior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) recorded 25 assists.
Junior outside hitter Hannah Shields led the Cougars with 11 kills and nine digs, while sophomore setter Keenan Marks registered 27 assists.
The Generals play their final two matches of the W&L Invitational on Saturday. The Blue and White will take on Southern Virginia at 10:30 am and St. Mary's (Md.) at 3:30 pm.
