LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) recorded 18 kills and a .455 hitting percentage to help lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-14, 17-25, 25-13 victory over Centre College in the Generals' opening match of the W&L Invitational on Friday at the Warner Center.
The Generals (4-1) led the first set 20-19, but scored five of the last six points on the strength of three kills from sophomore outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C. / John T. Hoggard) to claim a 25-20 win. W&L took each of the first seven points of the second set to cruise to the 25-14 score.
Centre (2-3) bounced back with a match-best 12 kills in the third set en route to a 25-17 score that sliced it to a 2-1 set advantage for the Generals. However, Webb produced six kills in the fourth set and W&L easily closed out the match with a 25-13 score.
Webb added eight digs and two block assists to her season-best kill total. Cosgrove finished with 13 kills, 12 digs, two assists and two service aces, while junior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va. / Northside) totaled 32 assists, 15 digs, three kills and two service aces. Junior libero Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif. / Quartz Hill) added 22 digs and six assists.
The Colonels were led by junior outside hitter Hailey Foote, who notched 10 kills and five digs. Senior setter Shelby Foote totaled 17 assists and 11 digs, while first-year outside hitter Peyton Vacala registered 11 digs and four kills.
W&L also hosts Averett this evening, before entertaining Southern Virginia and St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday at 10:30 am and 3:30 pm, respectively.
