LEXINGTON, Va. — Despite 15 kills from senior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) and 14 kills from first-year outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy), the Washington and Lee volleyball team lost to Randolph-Macon, 3-1, on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Yellow Jackets (20-6, 11-0 ODAC) came out aggressive in the opening set, winning 12 of the first 15 points. The two teams traded points for the rest of the set, with R-MC claiming it, 25-12. The Generals (17-11, 9-2 ODAC) responded in the second by putting the Jackets in an early 6-2 hole. W&L extended the lead to as large as seven (21-14), before holding on to a 25-21 victory.
The two squads went back and forth in the third with the R-MC leading 19-18 late in the set. From there, the Yellow Jackets scored six of the final seven points to take the set, 25-19. R-MC used the momentum in the third to jump out to an early lead (9-4) in the fourth. The Blue and White cut the lead to three, 12-9, but the Jackets scored 13 of the last 18 points to win the set, 25-14, and claim the 3-1 victory in the match.
Senior outside hitter Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) led all players with 19 kills. She also had a double-double with 15 digs. Senior middle hitter Katie Rossberg (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) added 16 kills and eight digs.
Along with her 15 kills, Lausberg collected seven digs and three assists. Guignon had a double-double with 16 digs and 14 kills. Sophomore setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) had 39 assists and seven digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) posted a match-high 24 digs.
The Generals finish the regular season at the Emory Invitational on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, W&L will play Clarkson at 4:00 pm and Berry at 8:00 pm.
