LEXINGTON, Va. — Second-ranked Christopher Newport used 20 kills from junior outside hitter Briana Sutton (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) to defeat the Washington and Lee volleyball team, 3-0, at the Warner Center on Saturday.
The Captains (14-2) won the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-15, but the Generals (9-6) controlled most of the third. W&L was leading 21-15, but CNU took 12 of the last 16 points to win the set, 27-25, and the match.
The Blue and White had two players with at least 10 kills. Senior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) led the team with 11 and first-year outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) added 10. Junior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) posted nine kills on a .350 hitting percentage.
Sophomore defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) led the defense with a match-high 14 digs, and she also had four assists. Sophomore setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) notched 29 assists.
Sutton registered her 20 kills on 41 attempts with eight errors for a .293 hitting percentage. Junior defensive specialist Evelyn Harper (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) and senior outside hitter Abby McIntyre (Hillsboro, Va./Loudoun Valley) each had 10 digs to lead the back row.
The Generals return to action next Saturday when they play Virginia Wesleyan and Mary Washington at Virginia Beach, Va.
