ROANOKE, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team used a .308 hitting percentage to win its opening ODAC match of the year, 3-0, at Hollins on Wednesday.
The Generals (6-4, 1-0 ODAC) cruised in the first set, 25-10. In the second, Hollins (2-8, 0-1 ODAC) came back from a 20-9 deficit and tied the score at 24-24, but back-to-back kills by senior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) and first-year outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) pushed W&L to a 26-24 win. The Blue and White ended the match by taking the third, 25-8.
W&L notched 46 kills on 107 attempts with only 13 errors (.308), while HU had just 20 kills on 100 attempts with 11 errors (.090). Junior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) led the Generals with 12 kills on just 18 attempts with two errors (.556).
Lausberg tallied 10 kills on a .308 hitting percentage, and Guignon had eight kills with a .412 hitting percentage and 14 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) led the back row with 20 digs, and sophomore setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) notched 36 assists.
Senior outside hitter Rikki Martinez registered six kills to lead Hollins and also had seven digs. Senior outside hitter Haley Ortiz recorded a team-high 12 digs.
The Generals continue ODAC play on Friday when they play at Randolph at 7:00 pm.
