W&L Volleyball Rallies to Defeat Covenant, 3-2

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team fell behind 2-0 to Covenant on Saturday at the Maryville Invitational, but the Generals won the final three sets to claim a 3-2 victory.

The Scots (1-1) won the first set, 27-25, and then took the second, 25-15. W&L (3-2) responded by claiming the third, 25-23, and the fourth, 25-21. In the final set, the Blue and White edged Covenant, 16-14, to win the match.

Senior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) led the Generals with 16 kills and added 16 digs. Senior middle blocker Jenna Gustafson (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker School) and junior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) also recorded double-digit kills. Gustafson tallied 13 on a .423 hitting percentage and Shand had 12, along with three blocks.

Sophomore defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) led the back row with a career-high 27 digs. First-year outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) notched 23 digs and six kills. Sophomore setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) totaled 39 assists and 12 digs.

Further statistics were not immediately available after the match. The Generals next play their first home match of the season on Friday, September 11, when they host Averett at 5:00 pm as part of the W&L Invitational.
