LEXINGTON, Va. — With a career-high 22 kills from junior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) and a season-high 15 kills from junior outside hitter Kasey Cannon (North Wales, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy), the Washington and Lee volleyball team edged Randolph, 3-1, on Tuesday at the Warner Center.
The two teams went back and forth throughout the match, as only nine points separated the squads over the course of the four sets. The Generals (22-4, 8-2 ODAC) took the first set, 27-25. The WildCats (17-9, 5-4 ODAC) responded by winning the second, 25-23.
W&L won the third by three points, 25-22, which was the only set to be decided by more than two points. In the fourth, The Generals held a 21-18 lead late in the set, but Randolph won four straight points to take a 22-21 edge.
The squads went back and forth with the Blue and White eventually taking a 25-24 advantage. From there, the Wildcats fought off four match points before a combined block by sophomore middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) and first-year outside hitter Mary Silliman (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) gave the Generals a 30-28 win to secure the match.
Lausberg tallied her career-high 22 kills on 50 attempts with just five errors for a .340 hitting percentage. She also registered six digs. Cannon tied her career-high in kills and also totaled nine digs.
Shand notched 11 kills and four total blocks, while junior middle blocker Jenna Gustafson (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker School) had 10 kills, seven digs and three assists.
First-year setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) recorded a career-high 48 assists to go along with eight digs and four kills. First-year defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) registered 20 digs, which marked the third time this season she's had at least 20 digs.
Randolph outside hitter Jordan Templin (Ferrum, Va./Franklin Co.) led all players with 26 kills while hitting .404. She also tallied a team-high 17 digs. Senior setter Kerry McMichael (Westminster, S.C./West Oak) tallied a WildCat record 55 assists.
The victory extended W&L's home winning streak to 21. The program record for consecutive home victories is 25, which happened over the 2005, 2006 and 2007 seasons.
The Generals travel to Guilford on Saturday for a 1:00 pm contest.
