NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team opened the 2014 season on Friday at the CNU Captains Classic with a 3-0 victory over Keene State.
The Generals' (1-0) defense stymied the Owls (0-1) throughout the contest, holding Keene State to below 16 points in each set and a -.133 hitting percentage for the match. W&L took the first set, 25-10, won the second, 25-13, and closed out the match in the third, 25-15.
Lausberg reached her total on 13 attempts with one error for a .462 hitting percentage. Shand needed only nine attempts with no errors to reach seven kills for a .778 hitting percentage. She also added two digs and two blocks.
Junior setter Alex Kinzer (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) distributed the ball on offense with 22 assists, while senior defensive specialist Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) led the back row with 12 digs. Junior outside hitter Mansie Hough (St. Petersburg, Fla./Canterbury School) contributed three kills, four service aces and seven digs. For the match, the Generals hit .254.
Senior outside hitter Samantha Branning and junior middle blocker Madeleine Nossiff each had three kills to lead the Owls. Junior libero Alexis Michal totaled nine digs for the defense.
W&L plays 25th-ranked Christopher Newport later on Friday at 8:00 pm.
