MARIETTA, Ohio — The Washington and Lee volleyball team bounced back from a five-set loss to seventh-ranked Mount Union on Friday to best Marietta, 3-2, on Saturday at the Pioneer Challenge.
Led by senior setter Meghan Meleski (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin), the Generals (11-3) earned the 21-25, 25-14, 25-8, 22-25, 16-14 victory over the Pioneers (7-7). Meleski totaled 37 assists, 13 digs, five kills, six service aces and two total blocks. The six aces marked a season-high for the setter and moved her into the top spot in the ODAC with 30.
Sophomore outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) and senior outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's) led the Blue and White in kills with 12. Lausberg notched her total in just 24 attempts with only two errors for a .417 hitting percentage. She also added nine digs. Boles registered her sixth straight double-double with 18 digs. It also marked the fourth match in a row she has had at least 15 digs.
First-year outside hitter Courtney Freudenthal (Glen Allen, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) and first-year middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) also contributed to the offense. Freudenthal tallied 10 kills, while Shand added nine.
In the back row, junior defensive specialist Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) led the Generals with a season-high 22 digs. It was the second time this season she has recorded at least 20 digs.
Paige DeVriendt led Marietta with 13 kills and Mary Ervin notched 20 digs. W&L totaled 19 service aces with the Pioneers registering three. The Blue and White also led in total kills, 57-41.
The Generals play West Va. Tech later on Saturday in their final match at the Pioneer Challenge.
