MARIETTA, Ohio — In its first match at the Pioneer Challenge hosted by Marietta, the Washington and Lee volleyball team pushed seventh-ranked Mount Union to five sets but the Raiders (14-0) remained unbeaten with a 3-2 victory.
Mount Union jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, taking nine of the first 11 points, and held on, 25-19. Each team had a set point in the second, but the Generals (10-3) eventually won, 27-25.
The Raiders responded by claiming the third, 25-17. W&L took a 10-4 lead in the fourth, and used the advantage to push the match to five, 25-22. Mount Union won six of the first eight points in the fifth and fought off the Blue and White, 15-7, to earn the victory.
W&L had two players record double-doubles. Senior outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's) had 14 kills and 17 digs and senior setter Meghan Meleski (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) notched 31 assists and 15 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Mansie Hough (St. Petersburg, Fla./Canterbury School) stuffed the stat sheet with six kills, 11 digs and four service aces. Junior defensive specialist Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) added 16 digs and five aces.
Senior outside hitter Taylor Webb totaled a match-high 16 kills to lead the Raiders, while sophomore middle hitter Kara Berger contributed 11 kills. Junior defensive specialist Lauren Mastoine controlled the back row with 26 digs.
The Generals play two matches on Saturday to finish up their play at the Pioneer Challenge. W&L plays Marietta at 10:30 am and West Virginia Tech at 2:30 pm.
