LYNCHBURG, Va. — Playing its first road ODAC contest of the season, the Washington and Lee volleyball team won at Lynchburg on Wednesday, 3-1.
The Generals (10-2, 3-0 ODAC) claimed the first set, 25-19, but the Hornets (4-8, 1-3 ODAC) came back to win the second, 26-24. W&L regained an advantage by taking the third, 25-22, and then held off Lynchburg to win the fourth, 25-23.
The Blue and White used a strong defensive effort from almost its entire squad, as six players recorded at least 10 digs. Senior outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's) led the team with 17 digs. She also tied for the team lead with 13 kills.
Sophomore right side Maddie Kosar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) and junior defensive specialist Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) each had 15 digs. Senior setter Meghan Meleski (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) did a little bit of everything for the Generals. She totaled 42 assists, three service aces, 12 digs, four total blocks and three kills.
In the front row, sophomore outside hitter Mansie Hough (St. Petersburg, Fla./Canterbury School) and first-year outside hitter Courtney Freudenthal (Glen Allen, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) joined Boles with double-digit kills. Freudenthal notched 13 kills, while Hough registered 11. First-year middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) tallied nine kills in just 16 attempts for a .562 hitting percentage.
First-year outside hitter Amanda Perry led the Hornets with 12 kills and 11 digs. Junior middle hitter Aricquel Payne recorded a match-high 21 digs and nine kills.
The Generals play at the Pioneer Classic this weekend hosted by Marietta. W&L takes on seventh-ranked Mount Union on Friday at 7:30 pm.
