LEXINGTON, Va. — For the 11th time in program history, the Washington and Lee volleyball team is competing in the NCAA Tournament. The Generals are the seventh seed in the South Region and will play second-seeded and host Christopher Newport on Friday, November 9 at 8:00 pm in Newport News, Va.
The Generals (26-9) played at CNU (36-2) earlier this season on October 2. The Captains earned a 3-0 victory in the match, but the teams were tied at 19 in the first and second sets, before CNU pulled away for the win. Christopher Newport is currently ranked fifth in the nation and secured an automatic berth in the tournament by winning the USA South championship.
W&L locked up its spot in the tournament after defeating Lynchburg on Saturday, November 3, to claim the 13th Old Dominion Athletic Conference title in program history and the league's automatic bid.
Washington and Lee last played in the NCAA Tournament in 2010. The Blue & White defeated Mt. St. Joseph in the first round, 3-1, before losing to Emory, 3-1, in the second. The Generals have a 7-10 all-time record in the tournament.
There are eight regional pods in the NCAA Championship, which each feature eight teams from across the country. Forty-two conferences were awarded automatic qualification for the 2012 tournament. Two teams were selected from Pool B, which consists of independent schools and schools that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final 20 berths were reserved for Pool C, which consists of schools from automatic-qualifying conferences that are not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams.
The other first-round matches to be played on Friday at the South Region site are fourth-seeded Trinity (20-15) against fifth-seeded Juniata (24-11) at 12:30 pm, top-seeded Emory (31-5) versus eighth-seeded Salem (14-13) at 3:00 pm and third-seeded Randolph-Macon (23-6) against sixth-seeded Gallaudet (31-6) at 5:30 pm.
The winner of the Washington and Lee-Christopher Newport contest will play the winner of the Randolph-Macon-Gallaudet match at 5:00 pm on Saturday, November 10.
