MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team pushed its win streak to four with a 3-2 victory over Berry at the Rhodes Fall Classic on Saturday.
The Generals (18-7) won two of the first three sets, but dropped the fourth to the Vikings (18-4). W&L rebounded to claim the fifth and earn the 15-25, 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 15-9 win.
Junior outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's) totaled a match-high 16 kills and a career-high 28 digs to lead the Generals. Along with Boles' double-double, first-year outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) also had one with 14 kills and 17 digs. W&L had two other players with nine kills in sophomore middle blocker Katie Toomb (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) and first-year outside hitter Christina Kamis (Leesburg, Va./Heritage).
The Generals used two setters in the contest. Junior Megham Meleski (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) tallied 25 assists and first-year Alex Kinzer (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) had 23. With the 25 assists, Meleski moved to second in career assists at W&L. She now has 2,206 assists in her career, passing Alison Beard's 2,192. Christine Gladysz '06 holds the all-time record with 5,216.
Joining Boles and Lausberg with double-digit digs were Meleski with 13 and first-year defensive specialist Kasey Cannon (North Wales, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) with 15.
Leading the Vikings was sophomore middle blocker Gretchen Kaufman with 14 kills. First-year outside hitter Emily Stromberg and sophomore outside hitter Meredith Hopper each added 11. Junior setter Stephanie Quinn led the team with 23 digs.
W&L next plays at home against Guilford on Wednesday, October 17, at 7:00 pm. It is the final regular season home match for the Generals.
