LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team relied on junior outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's) on Friday at the Warner Center to top Lynchburg, 3-1.
The 25-15, 25-22, 22-25, 25-18 victory kept W&L (7-3, 2-0 ODAC) unbeaten in the ODAC, while the Hornets fell to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Boles had a season-high 15 kills, and secured a double-double with 10 digs. She did most of her offensive work in the first and fourth sets. She tallied six kills in the opener and five in the final set. She was one of four Generals' players to record double-digit digs.
Junior setter Meghan Meleski (Richmond, Va./MillsGodwin) directed the offense with 38 assists. She also added three kills on a .429 hitting percentage and seven digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) led the team in digs with 13.
First-year middle hitter Sierra Strathy (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and sophomore outside hitter Aricquel Payne (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) led the Lynchburg attack. Strathy had a team-high 12 kills on a .550 hitting percentage, while Payne totaled 11 kills and 13 digs.
The Generals caught the Hornets off balance in the opening set with their service game. W&L had eight of its 13 aces in the first with junior outside hitter Allison Rouse (Troy, Mich./Troy) recording three. Rouse finished the match with four and was joined in the aces tally by McManus with three and first-year defensive specialist Mansie Hough (St. Petersburg, Fla./Canterbury School) with five.
Washington and Lee returns to the Warner Center on Saturday when it hosts Randolph at 11 a.m. and Averett at 3:30 p.m.
