W&L Volleyball Selected Second in ODAC Preseason Coaches' Poll
FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2012 volleyball preseason coaches’ poll on Wednesday, and Washington and Lee was picked second out of 12 schools. The Generals garnered three first-place votes and 113 points.
Defending league champion Randolph-Macon received eight first-place votes as part of 118 total points to lead the voting. Following W&L, Lynchburg totaled 101 points and one first-place vote to sit in third. Virginia Wesleyan was fourth with 86 points and Bridgewater completed the top five with 83 points. Rounding out the poll were Emory & Henry (64), Guilford (62), Shenandoah (40), Randolph (38), Roanoke (38), Hollins (37) and Eastern Mennonite (12).
The Generals ended the 2011 season with a 3-1 loss in the ODAC Tournament Championship to Randolph-Macon. The Blue and White finished with a 27-8 record overall and went 10-0 in the ODAC regular season.
W&L returns seven players from last year’s squad, including five of the seven starters from the ODAC Championship Match. The team also brings in seven first-year athletes.
Juniors M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John’s School) and Meghan Meleski (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) headline the group of returners. An outside hitter, Boles was the ODAC Player of the Year last season as well as First Team All-ODAC, First Team VaSID and AVCA Honorable Mention All-South Region. A setter, Meleski earned First Team All-ODAC honors and Second Team VaSID last year.
The Generals open the regular season at the Maryville Invitational on Aug. 31. The Blue and White play Centre College and fourth-ranked Emory on Friday.
