W&L Volleyball Team Tied With R-MC Atop ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team tied Randolph-Macon College for the top spot in the annual ODAC Volleyball Preseason coaches poll the league announced Monday afternoon.

W&L and Randolph-Macon each received five first-place votes en route to 95 points overall. Last season, W&L finished 28-7 overall (9-1 in the ODAC) and captured the ODAC's regular season title, while R-MC finished 27-8, (9-1) and won its second-straight ODAC Tournament title. Both teams also earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Following W&L and R-MC in the poll were Lynchburg, which received the final first-place vote and 75 points overall, Virginia Wesleyan (72), Roanoke (69), Bridgewater (51), Guilford (51), Emory & Henry (35), Hollins (27), Randolph (22), Eastern Mennonite (13).

The Generals return a trio of First Team All-ODAC performers, including the 2010 ODAC, VaSID All-State and AVCA South Region Rookie of the Year in sophomore outside hitter M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. Johns). The other returning all-conference players are senior middle blocker Lindsey Dee (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School) and junior libero Cameron Hill (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant).
Last season, Boles led the ODAC with 424 kills, the sixth-highest season total in school history, and finished fourth in the league with 49 service aces. She also ranked among the league leaders with a .221 hitting percentage and 343 digs, while adding 42 blocks and 23 assists.
In 2010, Dee led W&L and placed second in the ODAC with 125 total blocks, including 32 solo efforts. The 125 blocks were the second-most in a season in school history. She also added 251 kills, 60 digs and 18 service aces in 124 sets played.
One of the Generals' three team captains entering 2011, Hill returns after leading the ODAC with 540 digs last season - the second-highest season total at W&L. She also added 45 service aces and 22 assists in a league-best 126 sets played. Over her first two seasons, she has already recorded 1,042 digs and is currently ranked eighth all-time in digs at Washington and Lee.
The Generals open the 2011 campaign on September 2 at the Averett University Invitational. W&L will face Peace at 2:00 pm, followed by a 4:00 pm match against Guilford. The Blue and White's first home match will be against Averett on September 9 at 5:30 pm as the Generals host the two-day W&L Invitational.
