INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its 2013 fall postgraduate scholarship winners and Washington and Lee's Lauren Schultz '13 was among the 29 Division I, II and III women that were recognized.
The selection of Schultz gives the Generals 18 scholarship winners in the last 11 years and 37 W&L athletes have been honored since 1970.
"I feel very honored to have been awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and am very thankful to the W&L community that made it possible, particularly my professors, coaches, teammates and the athletic staff," Schultz said. "Being a General, both academically and athletically, is an experience like no other, and it's a great feeling to have that experience recognized with this award."
Schultz, a 2013 graduate with a degree in geology, is currently attending Stanford, pursuing her PhD in geological and environmental science. A four-year letterwinner for both the cross country and track & field teams, Schultz was a two-year captain for both sports.
In cross country, she was a four-time First Team All-ODAC honoree, was the ODAC Rookie of the Year in 2009 and was named the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in each of her final two seasons.
A three-time First Team All-Region honoree, Schultz finished in the Top 7 of the ODAC Championship meet all four years, helping the Generals to a pair of ODAC titles and finishing as the individual runner-up in 2011. As a senior, she finished ninth at the regional meet, and she was a two-time NCAA Championship qualifier.
On the track, Schultz earned All-ODAC honors 12 times, including garnering first team laurels four times. Additionally, she was named the ODAC Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year in 2010, the 2013 ODAC Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and she was tabbed the ODAC Outdoor Co-Athlete of the Meet last spring. A four-time ODAC individual champion, she is also part of the school-record holding indoor 4x800 meter relay team (10:20.12).
Schultz earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors twice. Following her senior season, she was honored with W&L's Pres Brown Outstanding Senior Female award and the William D. McHenry Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. Scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. Each sports season (fall, winter, spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.
