SALEM, N.C. — The Washington and Lee women's track and field team sent a small squad of distance athletes to the Hilton Garden Invitational on Saturday, headlined by the DMR.
The Invitational consisted of Division I, II and III athletes, and the DMR placed third overall and second in Division III. The combo of senior Molly Ortiz (Ketchikan, Alaska/Ketchikan), sophomore Janey Fugate (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy), first-year Johanna Goergen (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and senior Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) completed the race in 12:40.75. It marked the top time in the ODAC this year and the second-best time in the South/Southeast Region.
Ortiz went back out later in the day and ran in the 800m. She finished second out of D-III competitors with a personal record of 2:26.87. Junior Lauren Woodie (Bluefield, Va./Graham) was right behind Ortiz with a time of 2:29.44 (third among D-III athletes).
The entire team competes at the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games this Friday, February 8, starting at 4:00 pm.
