LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee women's track and field team opened the 2012-13 season at the Liberty Kick Off on Saturday, which featured Division I, II and III athletes. The Generals took the top spot among Division III competitors in five events and were in the Top 5 in nine.
Sophomore Jillian Katterhagen (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) was the top D-III competitor in both the 60-meter hurdles and the pole vault. She finished 13th overall in the hurdles at 10.01 and ninth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.30m. Also in the pole vault, first-year Kaela Fiutak (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) took 11th overall and second out of Division III athletes.
In the 400m, W&L had the Top 2 finishers out of D-III runners. Sophomore Janey Fugate (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) placed 13th overall at 1:01.22, while junior Lauren Woodie (Bluefield, Va./Graham) came in 19th with a time of 1:03.03. In the high jump, junior Leigh Dannhauser (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) tied for fifth overall and first out of Division III athletes with a mark of 1.48m.
First-year Johanna Goergan (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) took first out of D-III competitors and 10th overall in the 800m (2:26.80). The 4x400m relay came in seventh overall at 4:11.12 with only one D-III team beating them. The relay consisted of Fugate, Woodie, Goergen and sophomore Sarah Helms (Cumming, Ga./North Forsyth).
The Generals next competition will be on January 12 at the Marietta Invitational.
