W&L Claims Two ODAC Weekly Honors
FOREST, Va. – Washington and Lee claimed two ODAC Players of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
First-year Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) was named the Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week and first-year Jillian Katterhagen (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) received Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors.
Kirkland garnered weekly accolades after she posted a team-best 4-1 record at the Fab Five Invitational where the Generals faced off against No. 1 Williams, No. 4 Emory and No. 7 Tufts. On day one, Kirkland took home a victory at No. 6 singles over Williams' Caroline Capute (2-6, 7-5, 10-4), but dropped her only match of the week at No. 2 doubles (8-6). She then notched a perfect 2-0 day, winning at No. 3 doubles (8-5) and No. 4 singles (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) against Tufts on day two of the invitational as W&L took its only win of the weekend (6-3). Against Emory, Kirkland earned her fourth win at No. 3 doubles (8-3). Her singles match was not completed due to weather conditions and space restrictions.
Breaking two school records, Katterhagen led the Generals at the two-day W&L-VMI Carnival. She placed first among Division III athletes and sixth overall in the pole vault with a new W&L record height of 3.60 meters (11' 9.75"). Katterhagen then teamed up with senior Natalie Stier (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton), sophomore Lauren Woodie (Bluefield, Va./Graham) and first-year Janey Fugate (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) to take second place among Division III teams in the 4x400 meter relay, crossing the line in a school record time of 4:06.46.
The women's tennis team returns to the court on Saturday when they travel to Carnegie Mellon for a 12:00 pm contest and the women's track and field team travels to Christopher Newport on Saturday for the Commonwealth Duals, set to begin at 12:00 pm.
