LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s and
women’s indoor track & field teams were in action on
Friday at the 2010 ODAC Indoor Championship meet at Liberty
University in Lynchburg, Va. The women finished fourth with 52
points, while the men finished seventh with 12 points.
Leading the way for the women was first-year Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton), who finished first in the 5000 meters with a time of 19:16.52 and third in the mile (5:28.54). The Generals also recorded two more top finishes in both the 5000 meters and mile, with senior Kat Telfayan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) finishing second in the 5000 meters (19:30.47) and fourth in the mile (5:36.54) and senior Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy) taking sixth in the 5000 meters (19:58.60) and fifth in the mile (5:38.82).
Other top individual finishes for the W&L women included senior Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) taking fifth in the high jump (1.51 meters) and sixth in the 55 meter hurdles (9.21), first-year Rachel Mensch (Edina, Minn./Edina) finishing fifth in the 800 meter (2:31.09) and first-year Marissa Thompson (Chatham, Va./Chatham) finishing fourth in the 55 meters (7.51), seventh in the long jump (15 feet, 9.5 inches) and eighth in the 200 meters (27.47).
The women also recorded a top relay time, with the distance medley relay squad of seniors Sarah Keckler (Gardners, Pa./Home Schooled) and senior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John’s), Mensch and sophomore Ashley Carr (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School) finishing second with a time of 13:32.61. The 4x400 meter relay of Armstrong, Carr, Sutherland and sophomore Natalie Stier (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) recorded a time of 4:28.41, good for fourth place.
On the men’s side, W&L was paced by three top individual finishes and two top relay events. sophomore Tyler Grant (Suwanee, Ga./South Forsyth) finished sixth in the 400 meter run with a time of 52.84, while junior David Doobin (Summit, N.J./Newark Academy) and senior Ryan Castle (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) finished fourth and fifth in the high jump, respectively, with heights of 1.89 meters and 1.79 meters. Castle also recorded a season-best 6.06 meters in the long jump.
In the relay events, the 4x400 meter relay squad of senior Sean Hurdiss (Missouri City, Texas/Elkins), first-year Steven Collieu (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena), senior Tom Brandlein (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and Grant finished fourth with a time of 3:32.50, while the distance medley relay squad of junior Rob George (Middleton, N.J./Middleton), first-year J.P. Sauer (Birmingham, Ala./Altamont School), senior Ben Stutts (Beverly Hills, Calif./Veverly Hills) and Brandlein finished fifth (11:01.86).
Both squads will return to action on Wednesday at the Christopher Newport Last Chance Pentathlon.
