W&L Women's Tennis Continues Competition at ITA Regionals
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team completed day two of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Sunday, hosted by Mary Washington.
In the Championship Draw, junior Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) had the most success on the day, advancing to the quarterfinals after defeating Nicholle Toress from CMU, 6-1, 6-1. She then went on to defeat Jody Law from JHU, 6-0, 6-1, and advanced to the semifinals to be held tomorrow at 9:00 am. Junior Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) fell to Ashnaa Rao from JHU, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 16.
Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis), Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga./Marietta) and Aalekhya Tenali (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) each picked up first-round wins in the consolation bracket, with Cahill defeating Abigail Payson, 8-1, Donnelly defeating Olivia Krasten, 8-4, and Tenali taking down Allison Henry, 8-5.
In the third round, Cahill defeated Jodi Noland, 8-5, and advanced to the semifinals after a win over Jenny Antoszyk. Donnelly reached the semifinals as well with an 8-1 win over Kaitlin Pfesterer in the third round and a walkover win in the quarterfinals. Donnelly withdrew after the semifinal round.
In the Championship Doubles Draw, the duo of Meighan and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) will play for the championship title after defeating Olivia Krasten and Ashnaa Rao, 8-2, in the semifinals. Earlier in the competition, Bailey Hogan and Sydney Lehman took down the team of Buell and Chelsea Mixson (Beaufort, S.C./Hilton Head Prep), 8-5, in the quarterfinals.
Genny Francis (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) and Tenali teamed up in the quarterfinal round of Blue 1 Doubles Draw, but lost to Amanda Austi and Lauren Fields, 8-3. Kelsey Vella (Sussex, N.J./Blair Academy) and Mary Elizabeth Shutley (Marietta, Ga./Marist School) fell to Emily Henderson and Reed Kegel, 8-6, in the quarterfinal round of the Blue 1 Doubles Draw.
The Generals return to action on Monday, when they compete in the final day of the ITA Southeast Regional Championship.
