LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee Women's tennis team wrapped up its first competition of the season on Sunday at the UMW Kickoff Classic, hosted by Mary Washington.
Junior Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) recorded the Generals' highest individual placing for the weekend, taking first in Flight A after defeating Brittany Pilkington from George Mason in the championship round.
In Flight B, first-year Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga./Marietta) recorded a first-place finish, winning her championship match over Marijke Boers of George Mason.
Sophomore Mary Elizabeth Shutley (Marietta, Ga./Marist School) collected second place by defeating Esu Erdenebat from George Mason, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in Flight C.
In doubles, junior Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and senior Chelsea Mixson (Beaufort, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) claimed first place in the top flight, first beating the duo of Lindsay Raulston and Shelby Harris from UMW and later defeating W&L's Meighan and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) in the championship match.
In Flight B of doubles, senior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis) and Donnelly teamed up and went 1-1 on the day, dropping a match to Ashley Delaney and Erdenebat from George Mason, and taking a win over Lacy-Thompson and Mina Saygi for third place.
Shutley and first-year Aalekhya Tenali placed third in Flight B doubles, defeating Jamie Cochran and Alex Miller, 8-4.
W&L returns to action on Friday when it heads back to Fredericksburg to compete at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.
