W&L Women's Tennis Blanks Sweet Briar, 7-2
SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a 7-0 win over Sweet Briar on Sunday at Williams Gymnasium Courts.
Seniors Sallie Griffin (Warrenton, Va./Highland School), Kerry Cotter (Easley, S.C./Wren), Jen Hall (Metairie, La./Metairie Park Country Day School) and Laura Simmons (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) each went 2-0 on the day. Griffin teamed up with Cotter at No. 1 doubles to take down the Vixens' team of Glory Bowman and Mary Elise Dugan, 8-1, while Simmons and Hall came together to defeat Sarah Manter and Emma Merritt-Cuneo at the No. 2 spot, 8-2.
In singles action, Griffin blanked Manter at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0, Hall bested Bowman, 6-1, 6-2, to claim the No. 2 victory, and Cotter recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over Dugan. Simmons notched her second win at No. 5, beating Merritt-Cuneo, 6-1, 6-1, and first-year Katie Florescu (Merritt Island, Fla./Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy) claimed the Generals' final win at the No. 5 position with a 6-1, 6-1 score over Rachel Byrd of SBC.
W&L returns to the courts on Saturday, when it travels to Hollins for a 1:00 pm match.
