W&L Women's Tennis Continues Competition at ITA Regionals
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team continued its winning ways at day two of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Sunday, hosted by Mary Washington.
Senior Christina Douglas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) highlighted the day with a championship title in the Blue 2 Draw. Douglas defeated Briell Smith, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals and then took down Angelina Sportelli, 6-0, 6-1, in the final round.
In the Championship Draw, sophomore Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) had the most success on the day, advancing to the semifinals tomorrow after topping teammate sophomore Allison Hupalo (Weston, Mass./Weston), 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Junior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis) and first-year Mary Elizabeth Shutley (Marietta, Ga./Marist School) each dropped their match in the quarterfinal round, while sophomore Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) fell to Shannon Herndon, 6-1, 6-4, in the round of 16.
Senior Jen Hall (Metairie, La./Metairie Park Country Day School) advanced to the final round of the Blue 1 Draw, but fell to Macie Wilkins, 6-2, 6-3, to be named the runner up.
In the Championship Doubles Draw, the duo of Buell and Cahill will play for the championship title after defeating Elizabeth Martin and Bryn Raschke, 8-6, in the semifinals. Earlier in the competition, Martin and Raschke took down the team of senior Sallie Griffin (Warrenton, Va./Highland School) and Hupalo, 8-2, in the quarterfinals, while Meighan and sophomore Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) were topped by Jillian Poppe and Natalie Savage, 9-8 (7) in the same round.
Senior Kerry Cotter (Easley, S.C./Wren) and Hall teamed up in the semifinal round of Blue 3 Doubles Draw, but lost to Betty Edwards and Mollie Musgrave, 8-4. Douglas and senior Laura Simmons (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) fell to Andrea Brush and Laura Steele, 8-5, also in the semifinal round of the Blue 2 Doubles Draw.
The Generals return to action on Monday, when they compete in the final day of the ITA Southeast Regional Championship.
