W&L Women's Tennis in Action at the ITA Southeast Regionals
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team began competition at the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament on Saturday, hosted by Mary Washington.
W&L dropped just two matches on the day. In the Championship Draw, six different Generals advanced to the round of 32 after defeating their opponents in the round of 64.
First-year Mary Elizabeth Shutley (Marietta, Ga./Marist School) defeated Lauren Brooker, 6-0, 6-2, allowing her to continue to the round of 16. Junior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis), and sophomores Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), Allison Hupalo (Weston, Mass./Weston) and Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) also won in the round of 32. Cahill took down Puja Patel, 6-0, 6-4, Buell defeated Abbey Hamstra, 6-2, 6-3, Hupalo beat Carolyn Shetter, 6-3, 7-5, and Meighan topped Alysia Rodgers, 6-3, 6-1.
Senior Kerry Cotter (Easley, S.C./Wren) dropped her match against Caitlin Gallinger, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, cutting her tournament short in the round of 32.
In the Blue 1 Draw, senior Jen Hall (Metairie, La./Metairie Park Country Day School) and sophomore Kelsey Vella (Sussex, N.J./Blair Academy) saw action. Hall advanced to the quarterfinal round, where she defeated Priscialla Montoya, 6-4, 6-0, and Vella was taken down in the round of 16 by Kaitlin Pfisterer, 6-0, 6-4.
Senior Christina Douglas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) competed in the Blue 2 Draw, defeating Mikaela Pope, 7-5, 6-0, in the quarterfinal round.
In the Championship Doubles Draw, three pairs competed for the Generals, with each team advancing to the quarterfinal round to take place tomorrow. Buell and Cahill took down the pair of Cassie Bowman and Alina Suyama, 8-2, in the round of 16. Also in that round, the duo of Sallie Griffin (Warrenton, Va./Highland School) and Hupalo defeated Abby Clark and Shannon Herndon, 9-7, and teammates sophomore Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) and Meighan downed Tiffany Kollah and Carolyn Shetter, 8-1.
The senior team of Douglas and Laura Simmons (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) defeated Miranda Martin and Anna Richman, 8-5, in the quarterfinal round, while competing in the Blue 2 Doubles Draw. In the Blue 3 Doubles Draw, Cotter and Hall upended Emily Gruenberg and Nina Simic, 8-2, in the quarterfinals.
The Generals return to the court on Sunday, when they continue competition at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.
