Two Generals Earn ITA All-America Honors

SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has announced its 2012 NCAA Division III All-America Teams and two athletes from the Washington and Lee women's tennis team were chosen for singles honors.

Senior Lauren Lukas (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) and first-year Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) have both been awarded All-America accolades for the 2011-12 season.

Meighan garnered All-America laurels after placing fifth at the ITA National Small College Championships last fall. The 2012 Atlantic South Region Rookie of the Year, she finished the season with a 21-7 record in singles play and an 18-5 mark in doubles. Meighan was also named the ODAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, while collecting First Team All-ODAC honors in singles and doubles. This spring, she advanced to the NCAA Division III Singles Championships, where she lost to eventual National Champion Gabrielle Clark, 6-3, 7-5, in the quarterfinal round.

Lukas was awarded All-America honors after finishing the year 11th in the ITA National Singles Rankings. She concluded her senior campaign with a 12-11 singles record and a 14-10 doubles mark. This is Lukas' second time being named an All-American, as she and partner senior Trelsie Sadler (Wakefield, R.I./Groton School) earned the award for doubles during the 2011 season. Lukas was also selected for First Team All-ODAC honors at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles this year.

The Generals ended the 2011-12 season with a 20-6 overall record and a perfect 10-0 mark in ODAC action, earning their 10th-consecutive ODAC Championship. With the conference title, W&L competed at the 2012 NCAA Team Tournament, losing to Emory, 5-2, in the third round.
