SKILLMAN, N.J. – Washington and Lee first-year women's tennis player Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) was named the 2012 Atlantic South Region Rookie of the Year, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Coaches and players from Carnegie Mellon earned the other regional awards, including Lauren Chen collecting Senior Player of the Year honors. Andy Girard and Michael Belmonte garnered Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year accolades, respectively, Katie Cecil was voted the Player to Watch and Cze-Ja Tam won the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award.
The 2012 ODAC Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year, Meighan notched a 21-7 singles record, with an 8-3 mark at the No. 1 position, and registered an 18-5 record in doubles play. Meighan was named First Team All-ODAC at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles, teaming up with first-year Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany).
Meighan was selected to participate in the 2012 NCAA Singles Championship where she advanced to the quarterfinal round before losing to eventual National Champion Gabrielle Clark from Emory. All athletes competing past the first round earn All-America honors.
The Generals finished the season with a 20-6 overall record, claiming a perfect 10-0 mark in ODAC play. W&L won its 22nd ODAC Championship and competed at the NCAA Division III Championships, losing to Emory, 5-2, in the third round.
