W&L Women's Tennis Downs St. Thomas, 8-1
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team downed the NAIA's 19th-ranked St. Thomas University (Fla.), 8-1, on Monday afternoon on the campus of St. Thomas.
With the win, the Generals improve to 15-5 overall, while the Bobcats fell to 2-6 on the year.
W&L began the day with a perfect 3-0 slate in doubles play and continued its dominance on the court with a 5-1 mark in singles action, taking victories at No. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6.
First-years Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) each claimed two wins against STU. The duo teamed up at No. 3 doubles, defeating Lauren Lightfoot and Ashley Ahern of STU, 8-4. Meighan then swept Gabriella Bongiovanni, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and Kirkland downed Emilia Vuorela, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.
The Generals return to action on Friday when they travel to No. 24 Mary Washington for a 4:00 pm contest.
