Generals Fall to No. 1 Williams, 7-2, in Women's Tennis
LEXINGTON, Va. – The third-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team kicked off the Fab Five Invitational with a 7-2 loss to No. 1 Williams on Wednesday at the Outdoor Tennis Courts.
With the loss, W&L fell to 13-3, while Williams continued its perfect season, posting a 7-0 overall record.
The duo of senior Lauren Lukas (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) and first-year Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) were the lone winners in doubles play, beating out Rebecca Curran and Nancy Worley 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. First-year pairing Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) narrowly missed a victory at No. 2 doubles, losing by a score of 8-6 to Kristin Alotta and Kathleen Elkins.
In singles action, Kirkland was the only W&L athlete to claim a win, defeating Caroline Capute in three rounds (2-6, 7-5, 10-4) at the No. 6 position. After losing her first set 6-2, Lukas tried to make a comeback at No. 2 singles with a 6-4 win in the second set, but was downed 6-3 in the third to Kara Shoemaker.
The Generals return to action on Thursday when they take on No. 7 Tufts at 5:00 pm on day two of the Fab Five Invitational.
