Generals Drop Season-Opener to Radford, 7-2
LEXINGTON, Va. - The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team opened the 2012 spring season with a loss to Division I Radford, 7-2, on Wednesday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
First year Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) began the match with a win at the No. 1 singles position, only to watch the Generals drop their next four games at the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 positions. First-year Allison Hupalo (Weston, Mass./Weston) took the second victory for W&L at No.6.
No doubles pair was able to claim a win over Radford, but the duo of first-year Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) and Meighan brought RU first-year Gemma Valls (Barcelona, Spain) and senior Petra Dajevic (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska Gimnazija) to a tiebreaker, where the highlanders went 7-2.
W&L will next see action on Saturday when they host Bridgewater and James Madison for 10:00 am and 1:00 pm contests.
