W&L Women's Tennis Top ODAC Preseason Poll
FOREST, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team has been selected to take its 22nd consecutive ODAC title after finishing first in the preseason conference poll, announced on February 9.
The Generals tallied 100 points and garnered 10-of-11 first place votes to lead the league. Hollins collected the final top vote and 86 points to sit in second. Sweet Briar (79), Bridgewater (76), Roanoke (61), Virginia Wesleyan (55), Guilford (49), Randolph-Macon (39), Emory & Henry (27), Lynchburg (21) and Randolph (12) wrapped up the rest of the poll.
W&L, ranked eighth in the national ITA Preseason Poll and second in the Atlantic South, advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals last spring, falling to Emory University, 5-0, en route to a 20-7 overall record.
Headlining the returnees are seniors Ellen Yeatman (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central), Lauren Lukas (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) and Trelsie Sadler (Wakefield, R.I./Groton School). All three competed in the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships last spring with Yeatman advancing to the round of 16 individually, and earning All-America honors. Sadler and Lukas made it to the round of 16 in doubles play and also collected All-America accolades.
In 2011, Yeatman, Sadler and Lukas also earned First Team All-ODAC honors in both singles and doubles as W&L won its 21st conference title.
Entering the spring, Lukas and Sadler sit 10th on the Atlantic South Top-15 doubles list, with Lukas at the No. 19 spot for singles.
In addition to the upperclassmen, the Generals feature several talented first-years in Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill), Lindsey Burke (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Island), Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) among others.
In the fall, Meighan finished fifth at the ITA Small College Championships, boosting her to second in the regional rankings. Burke sits at 11th in singles, and Buell and Kirkland sit 14th on the doubles list.
The Generals kick off the 2012 spring season on February 15 when they host Radford at 4:30 pm.
