W&L's Sonja Meighan Captures ITA Regional Title

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Washington and Lee first-year Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) captured the Championship Singles Flight on Monday afternoon during the final day of competition at the ITA Southeast Region Women's Championships, hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

Meighan defeated Elaine Baik of Johns Hopkins, 7-5, 6-3, in the semifinals and then topped JHU's Hailey Hogan, 6-3, 6-3, in the championship match.

Meighan advanced to the final day of competition after victories over Bridgewater's Katie Gordon (6-0, 6-0), JHU's Kaitlyn Coleman (6-4, 6-3), Washington College's Amanda Bercovici (6-0, 6-1) and Carnegie Mellon's Chelsea Motie (6-4, 6-2).

W&L has now advanced a player to the ITA National Small College Championships for the second consecutive season. Seniors Lauren Lukas (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) and Trelsie Sadler (Wakefield, R.I./Groton School) took part in the doubles competition a year ago.

The ITA National Small College Championships will take place on Oct. 13-16 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
