FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – First-year Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) advanced to the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Region Championships after winning two matches on Sunday afternoon.
Meighan won both of her matches in the championship singles flight, defeating Washington College's Amanda Bercovici in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) and then topping Chelsea Motie of Carnegie Mellon, 6-4, 6-2.
Meighan will face Elaine Baik of Johns Hopkins University on Monday at 9:00 am in the semifinals of the championship singles flight.
Also competing in the championship singles flight was senior Lauren Lukas (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln), junior Sallie Griffin (Warrenton, Va./Highland School) and first-years Lindsey Burke (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Island) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall).
Lukas dropped her only match of the day to Baik, 6-4, 6-4. Griffin defeated Lydia Utkin, 6-3, 6-1, but fell to Baik, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Burke won her match against her classmate Kirkland, 7-5, 6-3, before falling to Hailey Hogan of Johns Hopkins, 6-3, 6-0.
The only doubles team to advance in the championship doubles flight from yesterday, Griffin and first-year Allison Hupalo (Weston, Mass./Weston) lost in the quarterfinals to Claire DuBrin and Cze-Ja Tam of Carnegie Mellon, 8-4.
